More and more students are discovering courses at Western that teach them how to paddle a Whitewater river, backpack a mountain trail, or cast a fly into a crystal-clear trout pool. \ the courses quickly till up e mighty popular. One reason the outdoor courses are offered is the location of WCU—right in the heart of backpacking and "We're really in a natural selling to teach these kinds of courses." Dr. Ouinn Constant/, professor of health and physical education, said. lhe ouldooi sports courses aren't just fun and games. I hev stress the safety precautions generally needed in a particular sport and for outdoor sports in general. One of the most important precautions when you are outside is lo be aware of hypothermia (exposure). Miss Kenyoii Faircy. another outdoor sports teacher said. Dr. Otto H. Spjlker teaches canoeing, one of the most popular outdoor courses. The first sessions help develop skills in safety techniques and paddling strokes. These arc demonstrated in the classroom and sw iniming pool. Next, the budding river-runners practice the skills on a slow area of the river, and later graduate to the Miss Faircy leaches another popular course—hiking "In the classroom we try to cover the pros and cons of the different tv pes of equipment, food, selection of clothing, and basic survival and safety." she explained. Dr. Constant? and Miss Faircy have purchased a variety of tents, backpacks, and stoves not only to use on the required trips bill to demonstrate the range of equipment available to outdoor enthusiasts. Two hikes, one a 10-12 mile day hike and the other, a three-day backpacking trip, are required lor the course. "Some people take hiking as an introductory class to find oni if they really are interested in backpacking before buying any expensive equipment." she said.
