  • western ■• • arolmian Cats Look Forward to Furman by Daniel Hooker After losing a tough one in Johnson City, Tenn., the Catamount football team will look to get things back on track as the Furman Paladins come to Cullowhee this Saturday. The Paladins will bring in a 2-1 record, 1-0 in conference play, to E. J. Whitmire Stadium. Western posts a 1-2 overall, 1-1 conference mark. In the series between Furman and Western Carolina, the Cats have posted a 8-14-2 record. Western has lost 7 of 10 games in Cullowhee. Last week, the Paladins totaled 203 yards on the ground, led by sophomore Marq Cerqua. Last year in Greenville, he dashed for a career-long 78-yard run against the Catamounts. Furman is deep at available running backs. Junior tailback Ernest Crosby, who last week had 35 yards on the ground, will add a toughness to the Furman offense. The Furman offense will be led by a fiery freshman quarterback, Brent Rickman. Last week, against Virginia Military Institute, he passed for 335 yards in 19 completions. Coach Bill Bleil stated, "Their quarterback is a true freshman, but he looked like an all-conference player last Saturday." On the defensive side of the ball, the Paladins have an All-Southern Conference rush end, senior Bryan Dailer. Last year, he led the league with 24 tackles-for-losses and 14 sacks. Yet against VMI he only had 2 tackles, one for a loss. Dailer will be backed by an outstanding line backing corps and secondary. Senior Bernard Scott and junior Orlando Ruff combined for 9 tackles against the Keydets last week from their linebacking positions. Scott also had the only sack, for a loss of 8 yards. In the secondary, junior Rico Perkins and senior cornerback Keith Jackson will lead the Paladins against the Western receivers. Last week, Perkins had 5 tackles and broke up one pass, while Jackson had one interception and one break-up. This is an extremely well-coached team with good size and talent. They are solid all over the field, but their defense is especially impressive," noted Bleil. "You think you've seen the best team in the conference one week [ETSU] and here comes a team like Furman," he added. Bleil also stated, "I don't think our effort or intensity is a problem, and if we can quit shooting ourselves in the feet and become a consistent football team, we can compete with the best teams in the conference." At half-time of the game, senior quarterback, Josh Brooks will be honored for winning the 1997 Burger King Scholarship. Through this award, $10,000 will be placed into Western's general scholarship funds in Brooks' name. Brooks is one of 12 Division I -AA players to receive this award. Burger King wished to recognize student-athletes with high academic standards, community activity and playing ability on the field. Catamounts Take Charleston Invitational Title Western Carolina claimed its first volleyball tournament title since 1990 and the Catamounts extended their current win streak to four matches by winning the College of Charleston Invitational, held Friday and Saturday in Charleston, S.C." WCU is now 7-8 overall and has won six of its last seven matches. The Catamounts remained at 3-1 in Southern Conference play and will return to league action this weekend with matches at UNC-Greensboro and Davidson. The Catamounts won Friday afternoon's match with College of Charleston by scores of 15-5,9-15,15-7,15-10. They followed up with a 15-7,15-7,15-13 win over Stetson on Saturday morning, then beat Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon, 12-15, 15-11,15-4,17-15, in the tournament's championship game. Three Catamounts were named to the six-player all-tournament team. Sophomore outside hitter Shannon Sweeney, junior middle blocker Keeya McManus, and sophomore setter Jessi Fick were all honored, and Fick gained the tournament MVP award. Sweeney was coming off a week in which she received the honor of the Southern Conference Player of the Week. Three WCU players were in double figures in kills to pace the Catamounts to the 3- 1 win over College of Charleston: Sweeney posted 12 kills, 11 digs, and a .270 attack percentage. Junior Holly Poff turned in one of her best performances of the season with 12 kills, 12 digs, and a .429 attack percentage. McManus added 11 kills and a .450 attack percentage. Against Stetson, Sweeney posted 15 kills and only one hitting error for a .438 attack percentage to lead Western to a 3-0 win. McManus was also in double figures again with 10 kills. Junior Jessica Madden had a team-high 11 digs. Sophomore Ramsey Herron had six blocks. In Saturday's championship match against Jacksonville State, Sweeney led a solid team effort with 20 kills, 23 digs, and eight blocks. Herron accomplished a rare triple-double with 15 kills, 23 digs, and 10 blocks. McManus had 18 kills and a .395 attack percentage. Poff tallied 12 kills and 12 digs. Fick had 60 assists, an average of 15 a game, to go along with 12 digs. The win avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to the Gamecocks two weeks ago in the Mercer Classic. For the tournament, Fick averaged 12.54 assists a game, had 23 digs, four blocks, and a .320 attack percentage. She directed a Catamount attack that averaged 15.55 kills per game. Sweeney totaled 47 kills and 40 digs in the three matches. It marked the third time this season that she has been named to an all-tournament team. Herron posted 18 blocks to up her team-leading average to 1.18 blocks per game. She becomes the first Catamount to accomplish a triple-double since setter Kristin Baxter accomplished the feat (kills-digs-assists) in 1994. It was the first all-tournament honors in the collegiate careers of Fick and McManus. Blue Devils Slip Past Ruggers by Mike Peoples & Shea Bridges The Western Carolina rugby team dropped two hard-fought battles to the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday. In the first game the ruggers lost 22- 12 due to numerous penalties that the Blue Devils capitalized on. Scoring for WCU in the first game were Ryan Boddicker and Shawn Parker with their first tries of the season, while Shea Bridges dropped in a conversion. The second game proved to be a nail- biter due to a controversial call by the referee toward the end ofthe match that dashed the chances of a WCU victory. Matt Warren's late-game try was called back after he supposedly stepped out of bounds. The ruggers lost the match 15-10. John Farrell and Towin Rios both scored during the second match. The rugby team will host UNC- Wilmington on November 8, so come out and support the team. by Greg Iredell Welcome back to Wrestling Update. The ESPN Prime Monday crew discussed wrestling on their show. Monday Nitro was action packed. Ex-Falcon Bill Golberg has pinned Hugh Morris and The Barbarian and is a very big man. A Nitro Party video that was made by Brown University grad students was shown. The future MD's were in attendance in NWO garb. Dallas Page administered the "Diamond Cutter" to Vincent and Bagwell, they didn't get up. He faces Macho Man at Halloween Havoc. Jacqueline interfered in the Disco Inferno match and hinted she wanted a title shot, whatever. Ric Flair announced via telephone that as soon as the stitches heal he is coming after the NWO. He sounded mad. Lex Luger made Wrath submit to the Torture Rack. He faces Scott Hall at Havoc. Hennig's "Perfectplex" wasn't enough to beat The Giant. The entire NWO were pounding The Giant when Sting, that's right, manhandled them without use of the bat. Hulkster was not in the building. On WWF RAW, Vince McMahon gave Steve Austin an ultimatum to sign an injury liability waiver or be terminated. His reply comes next week. Owen Hart got "stunned" by Austin, who posed as a security guard. Hart has a restraining order on Austin, who escaped through a crowd that blocked policemen. The Undertaker broke out of a body bag to chase Shawn Micheals up the projection screen. Those two meet in a totally enclosed cage on pay per view Sunday night. The NCW invades Bailey's Thursday at 8 PM. check it out. Quote of the week, "Don't attempt to adjust your TV, I am this good looking", Marcus Bagwell.
