Bonita Jacobs, vice chancellor of student affairs, said in a recent essay that "the University will soon be implementing a system for assessing monetary fines in addition to the educational sanctions for those students who are caught in the act of violating the University's alcohol policies." The "three strikes, you're out" policy is comprised of four provisions that include monetary fines and two that include some form of restitution. Underage consumption, disruptive behavior related to alcohol consumption, and serving alcohol to someone underage all carry a $25 fine for the first offense, along with enrollment in an alcohol education program and four months probation. The second occurrence of these infractions carries a $50 fine. In addition, underage consumption also results in an education program and four months probation. A third offense related to these and all other provisions is grounds for suspension or expulsion from housing and may include suspension or expulsion from the university. Another provision addresses the presence of a keg, which carries a suspension from housing for four months on the first offense and permanent expulsion from housing on the second. A violent act toward another person or damage to personal property, or behavior that threatens the health or safety of a person while consuming or under the influence of alcohol, carries restitution and an eight- month housing suspension. A second violation of either provision carries restitution and expulsion from housing. Jacobs writes that these provisions will help to get attention from those students who choose to ignore the problems, probations and pleading from friends or authorities. She does express the opinion that these sanctions are not a "cure-all" to a problem as complex as the issue of alcohol consumption. Many of the solutions to these problems involve common sense. If you don't want to get caught and fined, or possibly ex pelled, don't put yourself in a position where a violation of these provisions is possible. We all know that this is a tough situation to avoid, especially when we are in the presence of our peers, which is most of the time. Jacobs recognizes the claims of many students that our generation is different from those that came before. She points out, however, that alcohol has been on college campuses as long as anyone can remember. The main difference, according to Jacobs, is the "trend toward binge drinking" that can result in severe sickness or death by means of alcohol poisoning. Whether or not these new provisions will be successful will be determined by student conduct the remainder of this year and for the duration of these laws. Jacobs says she will never get used to students and their friends dying due to bad decisions regarding alcohol, and nobody ever will. All we can do is be responsible and caring towards our peers and fellow students. The only way for us to halt this constant bombardment of alcohol warnings and guidelines is to determine the kind of university community we want to promote here at Western and work toward establishing it. Photo by Seth Sams Parent s Day Festivities Scheduled for October 4 WCU Adds a Notch to Its Bible Belt Nearly 50 religion experts from across North Carolina will gather at Western Carolina University to discuss topics ranging from the afterlife beliefs of the Cherokee Indians to the recent growth in spirituality on college campuses. Western Carolina is hosting the annual meeting of the North Carolina Religious Studies Association, set for Thursday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 4, at WCU's Madison Hall conference center. The meeting will begin with a Thursday evening performance of Appalachian shape-note singing, one of the religious traditions ofthe mountain's first settlers, led by Will Peebles of Western's department of music. During the conference, scholars will examine a variety of religious topics in a series of sessions, including "The Ancestors, the Dead and Archaeology," "Religion and Institutions," "Religion in Early Modern Europe," "Ethnographic Research," "Issues Religion in America" and "Theology and Philosophy of Religion." "The meeting brings together scholars from across North Carolina who are interested in the academic and comparative study of religion," said James McLachlan, associate professor of philosophy and religion at WCU, and vice president ofthe North Carolina Religious Studies Association. "They come from many different disciplines and perspectives, including ethnology, the history of religion, sociology, archaeology and philosophy." F.Y.I. Oliver's Soup, one of Cullowhee's best local bands, will be playing Thursday, October 2, at KJ's in Bryson City. If you've got a way to get there, don't miss it! Students at Western Carolina University will honor their parents with a day of activities Saturday, Oct. 4, including mini-lectures, a football game and a performance by one of the nation's top ventriloquists.
