  • news February 24,1999 iifii&n February 16 Two male employees of a roofing contractor employed to repair the roof at Brown Cafeteria pled guilty to possession of firearms on campus in District Court in Sylva. Both received a 45-day suspended sentence, a fine of $200 and costs, probation for one year. The court ordered that the 30-30 rifle and. 12 gauge shotgun confiscated be destroyed. Both were ordered not to be on WCU property for the period of probation. A student reported that she had been sexually assaulted by a male non-student who was visiting her at her room in Walker at approximately 2:30 a. m. on Sunday morning. The subject is known to the victim only by a nickname at this point. The investigation is continuing. Housing staff reported a WCU temporary parking sign in a room on the second floor of Leatherwood at 9:04 p. m. Officers confiscated the sign and referred the student in possession of it to Student Affairs for disciplinary action. February 17 Faculty at Reid reported that a male student had broken a glass in one of the large doors facing the Alumni Tower at approximately 9:00 a. m. Officers located the student later in the day. The student admitted to causing the glass to break and will be billed for the repair costs. Officers investigated a traffic accident which occurred behind the Library on Buzzards Roost Road at 4:30 p. m. where a driver struck a pedestrian, stopped, but then left the scene without giving information as required. Officers located the suspect vehicle in front of Stillwell. The driver a female student admitted that she was involved in the accident. Officers charged her with hit & run. Two female students who live on Buzzards Roost reported by blue light box that they had come home and found their door open at 7:41 p.m. Officers went with them to the apartment and checked to make sure everything was alright before they entered. February 18 Officers saw a male who was putting toilet paper on a vehicle behind Harrill at 1:31 a. m. The subject ran, however, his probable identity was established by the victim later and he was contacted by officers. No damage was done to vehicle. February 19-21 Officers responded to the second floor of Leatherwood at the request of Housing staff and confiscated a keg from a room at 9:10 p.m. on 2/19. Officers assisted the WCU EMS team with a male student who had struck a fire extinguisher glass and cut his arm at 1:50 a. m. on 2/21. The student was transported to Harris Regional Hospital for treatment and then brought back to campus by officers on duty. On 2/22, officers charged the student with damage to property. Housing staff reported that a student had threatened several people with a large knife and had threatened suicide at 2:20 a. m. on 2/21. On 2/22, officers found the male student in his room, searched the room for the weapon and found drug paraphernalia. Two small knives were found. Officers charged the student and his roommate with the paraphernalia. Officers responded to a disturbance on the 4th floor of Leatherwood and found a resident wrestling with friends from home at 3:30 a. m. on 2/20. Officers found a window had been broken by a liquor bottle but could not identify the person who caused the damage. Officers searched a room on the 4th floor of Leatherwood on 2/21 at 10:17 p. m. and found a small amount of marijuana and several items of paraphernalia. Charges , are pending on the two occupants of the room. February 22 Officers charged two male students from the 4th floor of Leatherwood with possession of marijuana, paraphernalia, and underage possession of alcohol in connection with a search conducted on a room in Leatherwood on Sunday night. Officers took a male student into custody at the request of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and transported him to Sylva where deputies served a warrant on him charging him with second degree rape in connection with an incident reported at Sunrise Trailer Park in September. Bond was set at $25,000 and court date is March 30. The subject was released on bond.
