Tuesday, June 24,1968 WNC-A Explored BY JACQUIE BUCHER There's no question about it. The W.C.U. campus can be pretty dull on a weekend for students who are new here. Of course, you can jump in your car and leave, but t do you go if you do not know anything about this area? There are more beautiful areas to see and scenic trips to take than you could crowd into this short nine weeks. It would be a shame to be in sum breath-taking country and not see any of it while you're here. So, instead of sitting in your dorm or trailer this weekend complaining about the boredom, why not pack a lunch, jump in the car, and go travel one or both of the two scenic routes given below. Highlands Loop THE HIGHLANDS LOOP - - Go north from. Cullowhee to Sylva and cut over to Dillsboro on U.S. 23-19 A. Take U.S. 23-441 at Dillsboro and you'll drive south up the mountain through Cowee Gap and on to Franklin. When approaching Franklin from this direction, you'll have a panoramic view of the Nantahala Mountains towards the estern side of the town. At the highway junctions, take U.S. 64 - N.C. 28 through the broad river valley into Cull- asaja Gorge. It's worth your virile to stop at Dry Falls for a short hike to (and under if you .vish) this beautiful waterfall. Farther on you can drive beneath Bridal Veil Falls and continue on to Highlands which is the highest incorporated town in Eastern America. It is surrounded by waterfalls, lakes, and granite cliffs. Take U.S. 64 to Whiteside Overlook. You will have a breath-taking view of the majestic cliff and valleys below. As you travel towards Schedule June 24, Tuesday, WAIT UNTIL DARK June 26, Thursday, THE GREAT RACE July 1, Tuesday, BATTLE OF THE BULGE July 3, Thursday, THE CHASE July 8, Tuesday, YOUNGBLOOD HAWK July 10, Thursday, ALVAREZ KELLY July 15, Tuesday, NEVER TOO LATE July 17, Thursday, A GATHERING OF EAGLES July 22, Tuesday, OCEANS 11 July 24, Thursday, NOT WITH MY WIFE YOU DON'T THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 3. Summer - Travel Cashiers, you will see many other vistas through the openings in the forest. Just before you reach Cashiers take N.C. 107 which will lead you past Glenville Lake and back to Cullowhee. Parkway Loop THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY LOOP Take N. C. 107 from Cullowhee on down to Sylva and then U.S. 23-19 A until you reach the turn-off to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Balsam Gap. You can turn either north or south, but the southern trip will be covered this week. First you will come to Richland Balsam Overlook, which is the highest point of the entire Parkway - - 6053 feet above sea level. Peaks in South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee, can be seen from this overlook on clear days. Next you will come to Beech Gap, Wonderland Waiting To Be This Weekend In Loops where deer can occassionally be seen. A side trip of about fourteen miles will reach the NASA satellite tracking station with its giant disk antennas. Further on, the road leads to Devil's Courthouse, where there is an overlook and also a trial leading up the mountain to the odd rock formation itself. It is about an eight of a mile fairly steep climb, but it is well worth it all. This ; articular area also has beautiful blossoming rhododendren in June. Shining Rock Wild Area, one of three wilderness areas in the East to be perserved by the U.S. Forest Service, is the next point in the trip. Then you'll come to View of John Rock, and Graveyard Fields, a once very errie valley that was made so by a huge fire many years ago. Driving on, you'll see the tortured layers of heat-formed solid rock, and deep gorge below Yellowstone Falls. Pretty soon, you will come to Wagon Koad Gap and from there can turn south on U.S. 276 through Pisgah Forest where you will find overlooks to see the Pink Beds and the "Cradle of Forestry in America." Here George W. Vander- bilt founded the nation's first school of forestry under Glff- ord Pinchot and Carl Schenck. This is really worth touring. Looking Glass Falls is next, and finally the drive down the mountain to the entrance to Pisgah Forest will take you into Asheville, You can have dinner or see a show in Asheville, ten return home to Cullowhee via 1-40. If you rather not take this round-about route, turn left on U.S. 276 back at Wagon Road Gap which will take you to Waynesville. From Waynesville just take 19 A-23 back to Sylva; 107 to Cullowhee.
