  • <5J news April 15,1998 "Carolinian i Beta Delta Honor Society Chapter Inaugurated by OPI Reflecting Western Carolina University's ties and impact around the world, a new honor society for international scholars was inaugurated at WCU on Monday, April 6, with 58 founding members. The ceremony establishing the Delta Zeta chapter of the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars included the induction of 13 WCU students and 45 current and retired WCU faculty and staff members. Phi Beta Delta, established as a national organization in 1987, is the First honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. The WCU chapter will be the 110th in the country. "We started the honor society in order to recognize the high academic standing of the many individuals on campus who conduct research, and who have a sincere and dedicated interest in international issues," said Lois Petrovich-Mwaniki, the chapter's first president. "In addition, we hope that the society will provide a vehicle for promoting and supporting even more international endeavors on this campus and abroad." Guest speakers for the April 6 event were Richard Reiff, national executive director of Phi Beta Delta, from the University of Georgia, and Naomi Tutu, the daughter of former Archbishop Desmond Tutu, of the University of Capetown in South Africa. Officers of the WCU chapter, in addition to Petrovich-Mwaniki, are Nonso Okereafoezeke, assistant professor of criminal justice, president-elect; and Phillip Kneller, associate professor of health sciences, secretary-treasurer. Two vice presidents, one from the United States and one from abroad, will be elected from the group of student members. Prospective members of Phi Beta Delta must demonstrate significant experience in activities with an international focus. Undergraduates must be a junior or senior at WCU, and undergraduate and graduate students must meet a minimum grade-point average. The WCU chapter has not set a formal schedule of activities, but it is likely to include lectures, discussion groups, international exhibits, music and dance programs, films, cross-cultural workshops and communication, and at some point in the future, scholarships for study and travel abroad, Petrovich-Mwaniki said. WCU students, faculty and staff who are interested in membership should contact Kay Moore in WCU's Office of International Programs and Services at (828) 227-7494. Charges Against Delta Sigma Phi Dropped by Jason Sheets Everyone on campus has by now heard about the recent appearance of WCU's chapter of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity on "20/20." Certain members of the fraternity were charged with hazing new pledges. In fall of 1997, the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity's charter was revoked because of the alleged hazing of its new pledges. Currently, the fraternity house is owned by alumni of the fraternity. On April 7, 1998, the case against Kenneth Reid Walters, Jr. was dismissed. Walters was charged with participating in the hazing (a misdemeanor in violation with GS 14-35) of Adam Feimster. The official complaint by Feimster was the "pouring of alcoholic beverages into his mouth while only dressed in his boxer shorts in front of an audience of male and female students." "It was not that big of a deal," stated Dave Stinson, a member of Delta Sigma Phi. "It was all voluntary. We can't reject a pledge just because he refuses to drink." Lenny Gonzalez, a former fraternity member of Delta Sigma Phi from Gastonia, N.C, stated after the charges were dropped that he felt "justice was done." The charges were dropped for three reasons. First, there was "insufficient evidence" to make a conviction on the defendant. Furthermore, the "witness present could not put the defendant as an active participant." Last, "the person alleged to have been victimized was an adult who voluntarily participated in the activity." Despite this victory for the fraternity, charges have yet to be dropped against Christopher Lee Peebles, whose case has been moved to May 12. Because of the charges against Walters being dropped, the question arises that even if all the charges against Peebles are dropped, will the fraternity be reinstated? "A dismissal of a criminal court case does not preclude the university from taking internal action with the same individual," states Dr. Bill Haggard, dean of Student Development. "It must be understood that a case being dismissed by the D.A. is not the same as a finding of innocence." He went on to add that "there will be no changes in the action with the fraternity." Feimster, however, still faces two counts of simple assault, one count of second-degree trespassing, one count of damage to real property and one count of damage to personal property. Warrants for Feimster accuse him of punching two men and damaging a fraternity house bathroom, among other things. RtLCHM&B.
