Whitmire, Continued from page 1 set aside a generous portion of his 900-acre farm in Brasstown, near Hayesville, to be used as a field laboratory, and the Natural Resources Management program has been involved in numerous demonstrations and research projects at Ridegefield farm since 1987. "Since that time, over 150 students in our Natural Resource Management program have been involved in research activities at the farm," Dr. Lawrence Kolenbrander, head of the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, said on Tuesday. "And Mr. Whitmire essentially provided the opportunity for us to do hands-on research." "All we had to do was put together a research proposal, submit it to Mr. Whitmire, and if he approved we were given authority to go ahead and begin with the research. We have done everything from forestry thinning operations, and some clear cutting operations, and he during that process has essentially, in many cases, paid for out of his own pocket all the costs of doing that research," Dr. Kolenbrander added. "No matter what he did, or what he was involved in, there was always education going on. There was never a time that I didn't spend time with him that I didn't learn something." In 1993, Whitmire received the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame Patron Award, only one of a long list of civic and community service awards he had received throughout his life, including the honor of being named North Carolina's Master Teacher in 1941 when he was teaching in Franklin.
