  • April 6, 1995 Western Carolinian Features Scott Nails Himself to a Tree by Scott "Scoop" Francis Last week I was bombarded with religion. Of course I am referring to the annual appearance of the self-proclaimed prophet Brother Birdsong. Brother Birdsong is rude and ostentatious. I tried to give him a chance. I tried to listen to what he said. I even gave him a chance to have his argument printed in the Carolinian by asking him for a phone interview after his demonstration. He never called me. I guess he was content in just making a scene of himself for one afternoon. How about the Newsboys concert? Now, I don't really care what kind of music we get around here. I would like to see some well- established alternative band myself, but it doesn't really matter what comes because I have the choice of whether or not I want to go. Don't I? Well, I thought I did until I was repeatedly accosted by people in the bottom of Dodson cafeteria asking me if I had my Newsboys ticket yet. I felt like I was in an airport lobby fighting off Hari Krishnas. I'm sure by this point I've managed to offend a large number of people on this campus. It wasn't really my intention. I just wanted to point out that less aggressive tactics can pursuade most people to listen to you than what I saw last week. The demonstrations I saw made me angry and want to give no credit whatsoever to the people involved. My own religious beliefs in this A Features Commentary matter have little to do with this commentary. In fact, neither do anyone else's. My father likes to believe in the Great White Buffalo and the Happy Hunting ground; I don't care. I simply think that everyone should be able to walk across the campus without being harassed. People have freedom of religion. It shouldn't be forced upon them. There are ways to get your point across without aggravating people. I feel like what I have said is the truth, and I'm sure many of you will agree with me. If you don't, feel free to send me your angry comments. The views of Scott Francis are not necessarily the views of Scott Francis or thelVesfem Carolinian. WC is sponsoring a "Write Scott Angry Letters" contest. The writer of the most hateful letter will win a CD, a Chia-Pet, and an autographed "I Hate Scott" dart board. ••••••••••••••a* Western I Carolinian i welcomes demos • from all local '. • bands, whether : they're recorded • in a studio or at • • home on your I crappy stereo.
