Photo by Rick McDaniel You'll Have To Be There By Rick McDaniel Managing Editor Tommorrow night at 8 pm, Last Minute Productions will bring the Carribean Rock-and-Roll of Jimmy Buffett to Reid Gym. The concert will feature Buffett alone, in an accoustical setting. Buffett has preformed at WCU twice before, once in 1974 and again in the fall of 1977. He appeared alone in 1974. delighting a receptive Cullowhee audience with his particular style of music, madcap merryment and good-natured banter. In 1977. Buffett was joined by the Coral Reefer Band, formed in 1975 after his successful A-l-A LP. The night after his Cullowhee appearance, Buffett took basically the same show to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, where he recorded 'You Had To Be There', his only live album to date. Buffett is no stranger to the sailor's life he sings about. He was born into a family that built and raced ocean-going ships. His grandfather was a ship's captain who instilled in the young Buffett a heart-felt love for the ocean and the life of adventure led by seamen. His remembcrance of his grandfather was the basis for one of his most touching songs,'The Captain and the Kid.' From a childhood in Mobil. Alabama, Buffett went to several colleges, playing in bars for the beer he drank and finally claiming a degree in Journalism. He put his degree to work writing songs, and struck out for Nashville to begin a career in country music. His lifestyle and music didn't exactly fit the Nashville mold, and after a visit to Key West with compadre Jerry Jeff Walker in 1971. Buffett began spending more time with the curious blend of smugglers and wealthy beach bums that populate Ihe area. This provided ample inspiration for his first highly acclaimed album, 'A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean', released on the ABC-Dunhill lable in 1972. Continues on page 5...
