  • western ■• • arolinian Furman Survives Lady Cats' Charge by Daniel Hooker As the old saying goes, "it is so close, yet so far away." This phrase applies to the season of the Western Carolina Lady Catamounts as another great effort wasn't rewarded with a victory. The Furman Paladins, who were the pre-season favorites to win the Southern Conference, escaped the Lady Cats best performance since the early part of January, 66-62 in Cullowhee last Saturday. The loss was the seventh straight for the Lady Cats. It also relegated Western to 4-17 overall, 2-10 in the Southern Conference. Furman improves to 13-10, 9-3 in the conference. Head coach Maria Fantanarosa commented that she was proud of her team's execution and offensive mindedness. "Definitely, a much better effort," stated Fantanarosa. "I thought we played with a lot of emotion. We looked confident offensively tonight." The Lady Cats were led by senior Karen Mason, who scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds. She also managed two steals. Her senior counterpart, LaSha Jackson, added nine points and grabbed the same number of boards as Mason, seven. "Karen stepped up tonight and became our go-to player," noted Fantanarosa. "She took the pressure off of the other players." Freshman April Fleck contributed 14 points and came away with a team-high five steals. Fleck commented, "We all contributed and helped out more today. We were more emotional—it helped that we made some shots!" Willow Russell, who fouled out with :34 seconds remaining in the game, scored 10 points and grabbed team-high eight rebounds. Point guard, Tamara McMahan, The Lady Cats offense get a lift from Willow Russell. photo by T.K. Roberts only scored five points, but dished out nine assists—her career high. Western had a 17-6 run over the course of five minutes in the second half to cut the deficit, and actually take the lead with 2:30 left in the game at 58-56. However, Furman nailed their free-throws down the stretch to put the game on ice. Coach Fantanarosa went into the game with a rotation plan for her starters and key bench players. "We wanted to rotate our post players against Furman's tough, physical inside game. And despite less playing time, our bench was really in it. They were really unselfish tonight," commented Fantanarosa. Furman was paced by Jackie Smith, who scored game high 27 points and 12 rebounds. For more information call 227-7206. by Fish Hello fans, I'm Fish and this is the Wrap-up! This week's column is dedicated to Greg Iredell who just can't get it that Ric Flair is WCW 4 life! With rumors flying and asses getting kicked, it's time for Nitro (or you CAN teach a dog new tricks). I'm going to do something different this week and clear up a few things that have been said over the Internet and in another news column (see dedication). Number one and most important, no matter what Mr. Iredell is leading us to believe, about a month ago, Ric Flair signed a 3-year extension to finish his career in WCW. Number two is about the Giant. The Giant is going to be out for about 4 months because of family problems (which he will not disclose) and trying to get himself re-signed with WCW since his contract runs out in March. Number three and lastly, The NWO WILL break apart into factions later this year, and like the whole Sting angle, it's going to be a while folks! Now, on to the BIG show... Nitro was from El Paso this week and we saw The Steiner Bros, reunite and regain the tag-team titles from Hall and Nash (The Outsiders). In a shock of sorts, for those who didn't see Thunder, 1,) Benoit lost to DDP, but they will fight again at Superbrawl. 2,) Hogan got into it with Savage again... looks to be compelling to see what's going to happen. Hogan comes out and gives us a HUGE announcement... Hogan and Savage fought on Nitro... looks to be even more compelling now... And for the results... Hogan loses to Savage via DQ after the NWO runs in and does their stuff. But hey, they used the chairs and almost anything else they could get their hands on... good match. And now it's time for the websites of the week. This week's websites are the Sting Fans Without Order at: http:// www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Field/5314 and once again, Wrestlingman.com at: http:/ /www. wrestlingman.com Nothing much going this week, but for more info, e-mail me at: toons@dnet.net and I'll give you more detail...
