  • western ■ • • arolmian Volleyball Suffers Tennessee Blues by Daniel Hooker The Western Carolina Catamount Volleyball team dropped two tough matches to teams that hail from the state of Tennessee last week. The Lady Vols of the University of Tennessee bested the Cats 10-15, 7-15, and 11-15, while the East Tennessee Bucs squad bettered Western 11-15, 15-17, 15-4, and 12-15 to take the win. Over these two matches, the Cats' record fell to 13-18 overall, and the loss to ETSU relegated them to 6-9 in the Southern Conference. The Catamounts ended their Tennessee battles against East Tennessee State University. Western battled hard, but, as ETSU head coach Kelly Andrews put it, it was a "battle of will." "I thought it was a hard-fought win," stated Andrews. "Things went our way in the first two games, but it was a struggle in game three."Her team was paced by Tennille Cox with match-high 22 kills and 22 digs. The rest ofthe ETSU team played well and balanced Cox's performance. Leading the way for the Cats was Emily Sutton. The sophomore from Cary, N.C, had 12 kills. Juniors Keeya McManus and Holly Poff added a .500 attack percentage and 11 kills/ 18 digs respectively. Ramsey Herron, sophomore from Greensboro, N.C, added 11 kills and 8 blocks. The Cats started off the series against Tennessee opponents with the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Despite fighting hard in every aspect of the game, the Vols proved to be too much, as the Cats were swept 3-0. Western Carolina head coach Michelle Hansen commented, "We played them tough. We had problems passing. We didn't get a chance to run our offense the way we wanted to." She went on to add, "[Tennessee] ran their offense and sided out quickly. We battled as best as we could. We had some mental errors at the net." Emily Sutton led the team with a .556 attack percentage and added 10 kills. Junior Holly Poff led the team in digs with 12 while, and sophomore Ramsey Herron had 10 kills and a .409 attack percentage. Men's Golf Sets New Record in Florida by Donald Costello The Catamount men's golf team closed out its fall season by setting a new team record in a 54-hole tournament. Western placed ninth with a three round scored of 893 at the Stetson Intercollegiate in DeLand, Fla. The 893 mark was eight strokes better than the previous record of 901 set by the Catamounts in Chattanooga last year. Freshman Marc Leichtman led the Cats with a three round score of 223, good enough for a 28th place finish in the field that included 17 teams. Head Coach Johnny Wike said Leichtman is starting to "come into his own" as a college golfer. Wike added that Leichtman has the skills to develop into a potential pro. Fellow freshman Jason Sugg finished in 34th place with rounds of 77-73-74 for a total of 224. Wike said he has been pleased with the performances turned in by the young players on the team. "We're right on the verge of making a move [to the higher level]," said Wike. The only upperclassman on the squad, junior Jason Thomas, had the low round for the Catamounts at the Stetson Intercollegiate. Thomas shot a two-under par 70 on day two. Unfortunately, the 70 was sandwiched in between rounds of 76 and a 81 on the final day to push his position back to 43rd. Other scores included sophomores Brad Hawkins, who shot 77-74-74 for a 225 total and a 36th place finish, and Mike Bowers, shooting 78-87-75—240. UNC-Greensboro won the tournament with a score of 871, 22 strokes ahead of the Catamounts. Host Stetson University finished in a tie for fourth place with Rollins. Southern Conference foe the Citadel was only one stroke better than the Cats with a 892. The Catamounts will see some of the same teams when they open up their spring season in February with a tournament in Charleston, S.C. Wike says "somebody has to go low" to emerge as the leader of the team if the Catamounts are to be successful in the spring.
