  • CAROLINIAN EDITORIALS Apathy The apathy of the Western Carolina student body is beyond belief. The average students just sit back and let a few students with more initiative take the leadership and run student government. Most students have the idea that since they are not very popular or are not Greeks that they cannot get into or have a say in student government. They are wrong! Anyone who is willing and able to assume the responsibility of taking a position in student government and its associated activities can with a little interest become active. The college students of today are supposed to be the nation's leaders tomorrow. But if all students are followers in college then how will they be able to do anything other than follow when they graduate. We believe that as trite as it may seem, leadership experience in college does help in the outside world. This has been proven in the past, Students ask what they can do in student government besides be elected president, vice-president, senator, or some other official. There is so much work to be done in government that the elected officials cannot possibly do all of it. If not elected to office, students may serve on senate committees, the staff of the Western Carolinian, or simply by making creative suggestions to student leaders. When a student is interested enough to take a step- to comment on current situations he may write a signed Letter to the Editor or to the President of the Student Body. However, some students are afraid of being booted out of school and send letters which are not signed. We have received three letters this summer for "Feedback" and have been unable to print them because they lacked the author's signature. These names may be withheld from publication by request, but we must have them for our file. We believe that if someone has an idea that he thinks merits attention then he should have the nerve to sign his letter. Student government can function effectively only with the aid of all the students. It takes students who want to better WCU, students who are interested in themselves and other students, students who will not be afraid to stand up before their peers, the faculty, and the administration and say that they believe their ideas to be better and more workable. Without this type of student, our student government will become no more than a puppet for the administration. Student government DOES work but it can and will work more effectively if all students, Greeks, independents, office holders, and non-office holders will work together and for the betterment of Western Carolina University. There in all its majesty sits the A.K./ K.A. Hinds University Center. Not Uie Student Union, please, or Student Center —UNTVER. SITY. CENTER. If you'll follow me . . . "Here in Uie center of the sidewalk Intersection is the garbage can donated by Pi Kappa Alpha. It was really quite nice, but the wooden garbage inside is in reality the best part of the fixture. It seems that there was no way to empty the trash, so Uie maintenance men took it on themselves . . . First Floor "We'll enter the first floor, where our formal tour will begin. To your right is the billiard parlor, where many students find recreation, and it is, incidentally, the only recreation facility per se in the building. "The next room is the fabulous Blue Room. This Room is really quite useful for many tilings, among them the political forum held once each year, the announcement of a new President every twenty years, and an occasional fraternity smoker, and many, many other things. Some of them are hampered somewhat by so many chairs, but we find many, many uses for this room, "Here are the offices for the Center Director and the University chaplains. Yes, the chaplains really do have an office here ... we had a surplus of offices for student uses and services. "Now outside and around the walk are the rooms for visitors to the University. Yes, Ma'am, isn't that an excellent idea? And here is the apartment for the assistants who help in the Center. No, they haven't moved in yet; they still live in the old building in a very modern apartment, "Come right up these front steps here — step lightly on By The Inimitable PAW the fourth one, please. It has a nasty habit of making funny noises when it comes in contact with the human foot, "To your left is the snack bar. When anyone gets som3- thing to eat, he must eat it in there, so as to not create a mess in our beautiful lounge. We'll stop in for a coke later, when we have about two hours to kill. You see, there's so much business, and the help insists on such a personalized atmosphere that sometimes it's quite a long time before you're served Second Floor "Here is our big second-floor lounge, where anyone can relax, read, study, play cards, and just enjoy himself. The offices in the center section are for the student government officials and are large, spacious, com= fortable, and ... no, we'll not see them just now. "The excellent color television set is always playing for the enjoyment of students. There is an excellent reception of all three major networks. " The lockers here are for the use of the day students. If not too many of them tobe in use right now, it's because it's summer school and we don't have day students. These in my opinion are excellent facilities, and there are very reasonable lockers and lock fees for them. Yes, I believe two of them are in use this summer. And around this way is more lounging space, and our very expensive recetion desk. It doesn't happen to be in use right now, because.... " Oh, and this is the Store where students buy supplies and books. It really only ap- on. We shouldn't go in right now , since they seem to be busy and we might disturb something. pears too small from the outside. Inside there is ample rooms for many, many volumes and a complete set of school novelties, art supplies, and so The Grand Ballroom " Follow me upstairs , please .for the real showcase of the Center. This, ladies and gentlemen, is our Grand Room. The objects on Uie wall are pieces of art from several traveling art shows. They certainly appear nice. And the chairs stacked >up at the right are not really suffering from lack of storage space. Yes,that particular phenomenon of the floor being uneven is a special architectural trick for sensitive effect Students have many fine dances here, which they enjoy in air-conditioned con- fort. Well, you see, we don't really feel there was any need to turn on the air-conditioning today.... "Over here is our nice faculty lounge and down there is the comfortable conference room. And here is the fabulous restaurant, temporarily closed for the sum Tier. It is an excellent, excellent facility where students enjoy fine meals at low prices. "Now, if I may answer any of your questions...Yes, the fraternities and sororities have off ices in the Joyner Building temporarily, but they'll be off campus soon, There was no real need for their governing councils to have offices here. "Yes, again, the campus publications have offices in Joyner also. You see, the newspaper is run by a radical element and both the newspaper and the yearbook staffs are far too messy and untidy to mess up our nice facility. " No , there are no bowling or badminton facilities, Yes, there were several cutdowns. CONTINUED Page 4 .... .
