  • by Greg Iredell This week's article is dedicated to Fish for doing the WCW half of Update. Now I only have to watch half of Nitro to see something interesting. On WWF Raw, Stone Cold Steve Austin opened the show by calling out the Nation of Domination. Three-fourths of them surrounded the ring. As D low received a Stunner, Rocky Miavia stole the Intercontinental belt. This will open a can of Austin's whoop ass. Jim Ross interviewed Vince McMahon in a effort to explain the Bret Hart defection to WCW. It seems after Vince apparently called for the bell at Survivor Series, costing Hart the world title, Hart broke monitors and punched McMahon, who still has a black eye. It was stated that Hart's WCW deal is worth almost $3 million a year. I'd leave too. The lovely and talented Sunny was the guest referee in a six-man mini (PC term for the vertically challenged) match. The little guys were getting it on when the intimidating Kain came to the ring. The minies hid behind broadcasters Jim Ross and Jim Cornett. In an attempt to subdue Kain, the Headbangers clocked him on the head with a boom box. They both received Tombstones. The Undertaker has stated he will never fight his brother, but I'm predicting they will meet at the next Wrestlemania. What is up with Rick Rude? He appeared on both Raw and Nitro this week. On Raw he had a beard but on Nitro he was clean shaven. Was one taped? Are there two Rudes? Is Rude that cool to warrant two of them? I'll find out by next week. Degeneration X insulted Commissioner Slaughter to the point that the Sergeant struck Hunter Hearst Helmsly. Dx then abused the old guy and TeePeed an X across him. Slaughter then came out later and declared that he will face HHH at In Your House on December 7. Newcomer Scott Taylor advanced in the light heavyweight tournament with an impressive of the top rope flying DDT. Marc Mero continued his jealous ways by calling Butterbean into the ring. He told the toughman to stop looking at his girl, Sable. Butterbean in the front two weeks in a row? Coincidence? I think not. Dude Love faced Rocky Miavia. Stone Cold tried to get back his belt but Miavia escaped with it. Austin and Miavia are scheduled to meet on December 7. See ya next week. Football Closes Season at Samford WCU Sports Information It has been one challenge after another for Western Carolina's football team this season, and it will not let up in the Catamounts' final game of the season. WCU will face its ninth opponent with a winning record and another team on a hot winning streak when the Cats meet Samford University, an NCAA I-AA independent, on the road this Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts, with a 3-7 record, and the Bulldogs, 6-4, will tee it up for both teams' season finales at Seibert Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., at 2 p.m. (EST) Saturday. Western is coming off a 13-7 road loss to arch rival Appalachian State while Samford claimed its fourth straight win in a 46-32 offensive show over visiting Elon. It will be the final collegiate game for 12 WCU seniors—quarterback Josh Brooks, tight ends Jay Brooks and Kawasak Penn, linebacker Marcus Bradley, wide receivers Andy Bush and Kenya Crooks, center Alex Sprinkle, defensive backs Telly Banks and Reggie Chavis, and defensive linemen Leander Dumas, Jeff Patterson, and Phil Johnson. WCU's defense turned in a solid game in the loss to App State as it held the Mountaineers to a season-low 228 yards. Marcus Bradley led the outstanding effort with 20 tackles which included five tackles for losses and three quarterback sacks. Offensively, the Catamounts struggled as they were forced to punt 10 times, converted only four of 15 third down situations, and starting quarterback Shawn Snyder was sacked eight times. Senior quarterback Josh Brooks led his team to its only score when he came off the bench with just over three minutes to play and completed seven of nine passes for 89 yards in the scoring drive, including a 13- yard touchdown strike to Crooks. An onside kick with 0:35 to play was unsuccessful and ASU ran out the clock. Sophomore Brad Hoover was another bright spot as he rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries. "Our defense was very effective, kept us in the game, and gave us a chance to win," said Bill Bleil, Western's head coach. "Our offense made some critical mistakes early in the game when we had a chance to take the momentum and put some pressure on them. Had we been able to score early, it might have been a different ending," he added. Meanwhile, Samford was having a shootout with Elon, a team that defeated WCU 17-16 a week earlier. The Bulldogs rolled up 440 yards of offense with a balanced attack that produced 215 rushing yards and 225 yards through the air. After starting the season 2-4, Samford has reeled off consecutive wins over nationally ranked Troy State, Jacksonville State, Tennessee-Martin and Elon. Saturday's game will be just the fourth meeting between WCU and Samford and the first since 1992. The Catamounts won the first meeting, 47-13 in 1969, but the Bulldogs have won the last two—16-3 in 1991 and 30-6 in 1992—when Terry Bowden, now head coach at Auburn, was Samford's head coach. Bobby Bowden, Terry's father and current head coach of No. 1 ranked Florida State, started his head coaching career at Samford in 1959. Ironically, the winner in each of the three games in the series was nationally ranked. WCU was undefeated and ranked in the NAIA top 10 in the 1969 meeting while Samford was ranked in the 1992 and 1993 games and advanced to the NCAA I-AA playoffs. western ■• • arolmian Senior linebacker Marcus Bradley was chosen as the Southern Conference Defensive Player ofthe Week for his performance in the Catamounts' loss to Appalachian State. Bradley recorded 20 tackles, ten solos and ten assists, including five tackles for loss totalling 28 yards. He added three sacks for 23 yards and two quarterback pressures. For the season, Bradley has 132 tackles, 11 sacks and six forced fumbles in ten games. Photo courtesy of Sports Information by Fish Hello fans, and welcome to the NEW Wrap-up with "Fish." On to the news and shortened Nitro Wrap-up. Monday night's Nitro brought us a HUGE surprise again! Uncle Eric (Bischoff) says that the surprise he gave last week was not enough, so he has another for us this week as well. As "Hollypuke" Hogan's music starts, he comes down and points toward the entranceway... and to EVERYONE'S surprise, Ravishing Rick Rude comes out in full suit! Now for you fans that don't know, Rude was employed by ECW, but had a spot with Degeneration X in the WWF as well. In addition, since Raw was taped last night, he was shown on both! This is the first time that anything like this has ever happened on the Monday night shows! The news according to some of my close sources tell me that his contract with ECW ran out yesterday which freed him from the WWF to follow Bret Hart into WCW! The thing is, don't look for Rude to wrestle any... because in his last stint with WCW, he suffered a career-ending injury. Therefore, he's pretty much the new propaganda boy. Okay, on to more and better times. The theme of the night seemed to be the New World Order rules again! This was evident in how they dominated everyone on the show that night. They punked several people, including the Steiners, Luger, the Giant and Zbysko. At the end of Nitro, the Giant and Scott Hall wrestled until the "nutless wonders organization" came in to beat the crap out of the Giant. But to promote the upcoming World War III this Sunday, they had a lot of WCW people come out and counter the (well you know who's) attack and had the ring full as they left for the night. I must say that it was a decent Nitro, but the ending was pretty much an exact match of what they do every time a Battle Royale is about to happen. Oh well, I guess you just can't have everything you want... can you now? Now on to the news segment of the "scoop." On the Internet, there have been several rumors of King Kong Bundy coming to the New World Odor, but he himself says that WCW has not approached him and that he would not sign a contract anyway. This is because he is fine with the promotion he's in now. The fact on when Bret Hart will finally show in WCW is in early January, so don't look for him before then. This is the news for this week! I would like opinions from my readers on this column. I hope it is packed with the info you need on WCW and its happenings. I leave you with my web site address and two ways you can reach me by email. The address is: http://www.geocities.com/ ColleRePark/Campus/ 8915. The email addresses are: (school) Suub@schoolmail.com and (home) toons@dnet.net. I'll see everyone next week with a new column. So give me your comments and suggestions, and I'll see what I can do! Remember that this is "Fish" and my WCW Wrap-up.
