According to Phil Walker, Vice President of the student bodyat WCU, negotiations are in the process of being made with Servomation Corp. officials at this time. In a meeting on March 10, with the president and general manager of Servomation, Walker, and Mr. James Kirkpatrick, business manager at WCU, the Servomation officials stated that it would cost their com pany $15,000 to supply the University with change machines. This total is broken down to $10,000 for the cost of machines for every dorm, and $5,000 for maintenance. The entire cost would be paid for by the Servomation Co. To compensate for the $15,000 expense, it may be necessary to increase the price of cigarettes in the dorms from $.30 to $.35. Walker stated that students accused of vandalism of the Servomation machines will be prosecuted by their constituent units, Asks "tell me why" for denial of tenure Clyde Appleton, Assistant Professor of M.isic at Western Carolina University, wh.i was denied tenure last August picketed the administration building Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Appleton is protesting the administration's re-■ fusal to "tell me why" tenure was denied. Appleton began picketing alone in front of Bird Building Tuesday morningabout 9:00. He carried a sign that read: "Terminal contract, Denied Tenure, Why? My American Right: To Face My Accusers." By early afternoon, Appleton wis joined by 30-40 supporters displaying signs and singing songs. The picketing continued throughout the day Wednesday and plans call for pickets all day Thursday. There wore only minor disruptive incidents directed towards the picket line. Some hecklers shouted and jeered. Several objects were thrown Into the demonstrators, including tomatoes and pop bottles.. For the past several months Appleton has tried a number of channels in an effort to. obtain the reason for tenure denial. In the last month » Appleton stated that he had spoken personally with Dr, James E. Dooley, head of the Music Department, Dean Gerald Filer, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. W, Newton1 Turner, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and that none of these nv.-n would tell him why he had been denied tenure. Appleton said that he also tried to see Dr. Pow, but was not given an appointment. Failing to receive an answer to his question in this w.iy, Appleton appealed to the Faculty Senate for a grievance hearing. He received a reply from Turner, Chairman of Academic Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over faculty grie- vences, according to Appleton. Turner's letter said that since the regulations of the Faculty Senate does not make specific provisions for grievance hearings of nontenured faculty, he and the chairman of the Faculty Senate declined Appleton's request for a hearing. Tne Chairman of the Faculty Senate is Dr. Alex S. Pow, University President Appleton is convinced that "The adverse contract and tenure decisions are the result of allegations concerning my present or past personal or political life," He further stated that he believed "only one's academic competence should be the basis for these decisions." In an exclusive interview with the WESTERN CAROLINIAN, l>r, Pow was asked several questions concerning Appleton's march, In his initial statement Dr. Pow said, "Although poorly conceived, these activi- tiese seem to be within the bounds of University Policy with respect to dissent. There has been no attempt on the part of the University to bar them." When asked, "What is the University planning to do; does the administration plan to confer with Mr. Appleton, or is :.t a closed matter?" Dr. Pow's response was, "It is assumed that expressions on behalf of Mr. Appleton will continue to be orderly. The University has no plans to inhibit them, "Mr. Appleton has been a probationary employee of the University. The Universityhas elected its right not to continue his employment after the present year. "The University has respon= ded to all but one of Mr. Apple- ton's queries. The University is not required to and will not en= large upon its decision not to grant Mr. Appleton tenure. Tenu-e is a privilege accorded by the University, not a right of the petitioner, "The University has no plan to reopen the matter." Whan asked "Are the marches futile?," Dr. Pow replied, "Tne University policy on tenure is in accord with accepted CONTINUED Page 6. . . .
