  • 20 Western Carolinian February 8,1996 Cats Run Past Marshall by Jason Queen Sports Writer Before the game, Catamount Head Coach Phil Hopkins promised that the game against Marshall Monday night would be a very exciting, very fun game to watch indeed. When all the smoke cleared and the track meet was over, the Cats prevailed with an incredible 125-104 win. Guard Anquell McCollum led five Catamounts in double figures with a career-high 41 points. He was a perfect 18-18 from the free throw line for the game, which set a. new Southern Conference record. "I was just in the flow tonight, and I finally hit my free throws," a breathless McCollum said after the game. Hopkins was ecstatic to emerge from the shootout victorious. "This is the big time for us. We knew they were a good team, everybody knows they're a good team ... but, God, 125 points-I can't believe it." That set a new record for points by one team in a game, points by one team in a half (WCU scored 63 in the first half), and total points by both teams. The Cats came out of the gates ready to put on an offensive show. Kevin Kullum's jumper with 16:00 left in the first half gave Western an early 15-2 lead. After Marshall tried to fight its way back in it, McCollum, Joe Stafford, and Larry Mayo hit consecutive three-pointers to push the Cats' lead to 31-13 at the 1 1:00 mark. The Thundering Herd cut the lead to 40-33 with 5:00 left in the half, but McCollum pushed the lead back to 10 with a three-pointer from 22 feet out. Marshall couldn't post another run the rest of the half, and the Cats took a whopping 63-46 lead at the break. McCollum poured in 22 points in the half, including 4-7 shooting from beyond the arc. "The key to the game was the defense we played the first 12 minutes," Hopkins added. By that time, the Cats had already forced 12 turnovers that led to several easy buckets in transition. The Herd came out of the locker room ready to make the game respectable. Jason Williams' basket with 15:00 left in the game cut the Cats' lead to 70-63. Williams hit two free throws at the 12:25 mark after Sidney Coles and Southern Conference scoring leader Keith Veney hit back-to-back three-pointers to trim the lead to 76-73. Coach Hopkins asked after the game that we kindly not print what was going through his mind at this point. Nevertheless, Stafford nailed a long three-point bomb of his own on the next possession to push the Cats' cushion back to six. The Herd could get no closer than five points, 91-86, the rest of the way. Sports Western hit the century mark with 6:06 to play on two Stafford free throws that gave the Cats a 101-88 lead. Jarvis Graham's dunk gave the Cats' a 109-91 lead at the 4:00 mark that put the game on ice. Western hit 14 of their final 16 free throws to provide the final margin. McCollum voiced his pleasure with the good fan support this season. ''When we get fans out here, they're the sixth man, especially the band." Hopkins also was pleased with the student section's support. "We've got to try to get as many students as we can and make Cullowhee, USA, the toughest place to play in the country." "Our guys really played hard tonight," an exhausted Hopkins added. Western improved to 4-3 in the Southern Conference, 7-11 overall. The conference mark is good enough for a tie at the top of the South Division. Furman's (4-3) game with East Tennessee State was postponed and the Citadel lost to VMI to fall to 4-4 in conference play. Davidson Tops Catamounts by Jason Queen Sports Writer Scott Scholtz hit two free throws to cut Davidson's lead to 63-59 with 10:44 to play, but Davidson pulled away with tenacious defense to hand the Catamounts a 98-85 loss Saturday night in the Ramsey Center. Guard Anquell McCollum led the Cats with 24 points. "They whipped us, they whipped us pretty good," a dejected Coach Phil Hopkins ] commented after the game. The Davidson defense, which came in ranked first in the Southern Conference, forced 18 Catamount 1 turnovers. "We didn't play real good, but part of the reason we didn't play good is because they guard the crap out of you. This ] is the worst we've played since Christmas." Western started out hot, playing right 1 with the Wildcats for most of the first half. Scholtz hit two free throws with 5:38 left in \ the half to give the Catamounts a 34-28 lead. WCU was obviously pumped for Davidson, j who received votes from the Associated Press to be in the Top 25. But Narcisse Ewodo led the Wildcats back to take a 42-40 j lead at halftime. McCollum had 10 points in I the half despite shooting only 4 of 13 from | the field. Kevin Kullum also had 10 points I and six rebounds. McCollum came out of the locker room ready to bring his team back. He scored seven quick points, and his 22-footer J at the 16:00 mark cut the Davidson lead to ] 48-47. But the Catamounts never could take ! the lead, and never got closer than six over 1 the final 10 minutes. Davidson hit 12 of their] last 14 free throws to provide the final margin. "I'll have to commend Davidson on their play. They play hard, they play aggressive defense," Hopkins added. NOTES: Kullum finished with 18 points on the night on 8 of 10 shooting. He j also corralled 8 rebounds. McCollum shot only 9 of 21 for the game. Scholtz added 1 points and 9 boards. The loss dropped thecaaCatamounts to 3-3 in the Southern Conference, 6-11 overall.
