  • February 23, 1948 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE THREE Bob Tate ■ WCTC Grapplers Get Revenge By Winning From Knoxville "Y" McKinley Hensley's Catamount grapplers found revenge for a licking they had taken at the hands of the Knoxville "Y" mat-men earlier in the season when they .swamped the Y-men 24-8 in the Breese gymnasium Saturday night January 31. The meet was highlighted by "Pop" Goodson's one minute pin of Knoxville's Castleberry in the final match. The Catamounts won three matches by pins and three by decision while Knoxville won one by each method. Western Carolina's only two losers were Jack Arney, by decision, and "Bozo" Burleson, by a second period pin. Both were wrestling their first match. Carolina East Teachers Taken 57-43 In The Initial Game Played Here The Catamounts handed the Eastern Carolina Teachers college, conference leaders, a 57 to 43 defeat here in Breeze gymnasium on February 9. The Cats jumped into an early lead and were never headed. Bob "Ace" McGinn was a standout on the Catamount team, both on the offensive with 17 points and as a ball-hawk. Barnhorst, Cullowhee captain, played a stellar floor game and contributed 12 points as did Pressley. "Rapid Robert" Tate was held to seven points but was a constant Thorn in Eastern's side with his timely baskets. Rhodes played his usual fine floor game and had 8 points. East Carolina had a balanced team with C. Moye and Everton each getting 10 followed closely by Thrift with 9. It was interesting to note that they used the Kansas system of set plays. Three-Point Margin Defeats The Cats; Led At Halftime Having a miserable night, the Western Carolina quint lost the second game of a two-day stand to East Carolina 43 to 40. The local five just couldn't hit and had a percentage of only 19 from the field. The Catamounts led for the first three periods but Thrift got hot for East and as the scoring punch fell off the locals East forged ahead and hung on to win. Thrift had 19 points to lead the quint from Greenville. McGinn had 13 to lead the Cats. The locals leave Thursday for three games on a road trip to Elon and Catawba. They need at least one victory on this trip to get into the tournament at the end of this month at Elkin, N. C. Student—"To whom was Minerva married?"
