November 30,1995 Western Carolinian 15 Sports Lady Cat Acknowledged for Studies and Athletics Kristin Baxter, a senior setter on Western Carolina University's volleyball team, has been named to the GTE Academic All-District III Volleyball Team, announced today by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Baxter, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., and product of Homestead High School, has compiled a 3.96 grade point average as a biology/ pre-med major. She is a three-time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll student, and has had As in every course but one during her collegiate career. On the volleyball court, she is WCU's all-time leader in service aces with 221 and ranks second on the school's career assists list with 3,445. She currently leads the Southern Conference in aces per game (0.51) and is third in the league in assists (9.94). She has ranked as high as third nationally this season in aces. The academic all-district team, selected by CoSIDA and sponsored by GTE, recognizes student-athletes who have turned in outstanding performances both in athletics and in academics. To be eligible, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in the classroom and be a starter or key reserve on the court. District III includes all university-level schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Baxter was one of eight players named to the team, chosen from a list of over 30 nominees, and was the only Southern Conference volleyball player to be honored. This marks the second straight year Baxter has won the district award. Last season she went on to gain second team Academic AllAmerica honors. Joining Baxter on the 1995 GTE Academic All-District Volleyball Team are Julie Amberg of William & Mary, Melissa Ann Mau of North Carolina State, Nikki Nicholson of Georgia, Kiki Okeke of Georgia State, Cris Omiecinski of Georgia Tjech, and Aycan Gokberk and Missy Aggertt of Florida. The eight players representing the District HI team are now eligible for the national Academic All-America Team which will be announced within the next three weeks. Contributed by Sports Information Two Catamounts Named to All-Time Team by Jason Queen StaffReporter In celebration of its 75th season, the Southern Conference has named a "Best of AH Time" football team. This is like an all- conference team, but it is made up of the nest players at each position ever to play in the Southern Conference. Two players from Astern Carolina—defensive lineman Clyde Simmons and kicker Dean Biasucci—earned first team honors. Marshall running back Chris Parker was the °nly active player honored. Simmons enjoyed a tremendous career with the Catamounts from 1982-85. ie was a first team All-America selection S senior year. That season, he led the conference in tackles for a loss, he was ra"ed in the ninth round by the Philadel phia Eagles, where he played eight outstanding seasons, he currently plays with the Arizona Cardinals under Buddy Ryan. In his first nine seasons, Simmons recorded 82 sacks and played in two Pro Bowls. Biasucci was by far the best placekicker in the history of Western Carolina and the Southern Conference. He was named all-conference in 1982 and 83, and still holds the record for kicking points in a game with 19. His five field goals in that game is also a conference record. Biasucci played in the Pro Bowl in 1987, the finest of his 10 NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Placekicker Kirk Roach and defensive back Tiger Greene were named to the second-team list. Roach was all-conference during all four of his seasons with the Cats. Greene earned All-America honors in both the 1983 and 84 seasons Cross Country and Track Teams Sign Three Local by Jason Queen StaffReporter Western Carolina's men's and women's cross country and track teams experienced their most successful season in several years in 1994-95. It looks like their success will continue next season as both teams signed highly-touted recruits from the western part of the state the day before Thanksgiving. Missy Shelton of Madison High School signed to throw the discus and shot put for the Lady Cats' track team. She won the 2-A state championship in the discus in 1994 and finished second in that event last spring. She finished third in the shot put at the state meet the last two years. Stars Ray Wallen of West Henderson High signed to run for the men's cross country team. During his sophomore and senior seasons, Wallen was given all-conference, all-region, and all-state honors. His team won the state championship both of those years. His brother Adam is a freshman at WCU who also runs cross country. Bill Baldwin will transfer to Western from Brevard College. He placed 1 6th in the National Junior College Cross Country Championships this year. "Bill gives our cross country team a legitimate front runner. He is one of the best to ever sign with Western Carolina," said head coach Danny Williamson. ™"- ,he 1983 and 84 seasons. t —- — fft_ t ffc_C A Look at Cats Basketball 95- 96 "^^ "^^"^^ ^^^ __ -.-.. • . i .i__ i_:__ rxricti- fi-i-A»n the* r\r\x\ onrar ! Frontcourt: This has been the big weakness in the Cats program the last several years. Center Scott Scholtz is a workaholic in the paint but he rarely has a really big game. Forwards Kevin Kullum and Jarvis Graham look much improved in the early part of the season. Kullum is an exceptional passer for a big man, and he can dribble and knock down an occasional three as well. Graham must . play better defensively this year than he did in his freshman season. At times last year, he was a liability on defense, which made his offensive production go for nought. Transfer Kerry Wright looks like he could be a dominant force inside, but he has seemed a bit timid at times so far. Freshman Joey Bryson is learning the system right now, but he will be a superstar in theis league before his career is over. Look for Bryson and Wright to get better with every game of the year. Overview: Despite the loss of King, rookie coach Hopkins has a crop of talent to work with. If he can get 25 points and 15 assists from the point gurar slot (Fleming and Mayo) and the front line players provide some punch, he will fmd his team in the thick of the conference championship race come February. McCollum and Kullum should take advantage of getting more shots this year, and they should combine for 40 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists a game. If all the other role players can do their jobs, this will be a very solid, very exciting basketball team. I love Joel Fleming's game, and I think he will emerge as a superstar this year. And if either Scholtz, Graham, Kullum, or Wright becomes an inside force, the Cats will not come up just short of a conference tournament championship and trip to the NCAA tournament this year. The Cats open the home schedule Saturday night when they host Coker at 7:00 in the Ramsey Center. Please come out and support your team. Good luck, Cats. I hope you have an outstanding season.
