  • 14 Western Carolinian November 30,1995 Sports Hodgin Eliminates Three Coaches Steve Hodgin, Western Carolina University's head football coach, announced the first step in the revamping of WCU's football program here Tuesday afternoon. "We have reviewed and evaluated the past season and reached the realization that several decisions must be made to get our program back on track," Hodgin stated. "Along with increased funding for scholarship, recruiting, and operations budgets, we decided some changes in our coaching staff were needed to help us move in a new direction and become competitive in the Southern Conference again," he added. As part of the reorganization of his coaching staff, Hodgin announced the release of three assistant coaches from their duties - offensive backs coach Sandy Kinney, quarterbacks coach Vince Marino, and offensive line coach E.J. Sandusky. Kinney joined the WCU staff in February, 1994 after spending 26 seasons as an assistant to Coach Bill Dooley at three schools - North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Marino came to WCU in 1993 as a graduate assistant coach and served as a defensive backfield assistant in his first season and has coached the quarterbacks the past two seasons. Sandusky was hired last April after spending the previous two years as a graduate assistant coach at the University of North Carolina. Four coaches will be retained - Al DeGraffenreid, a 16-season veteran on the WCU staff who served as assistant coach, offensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach last season; Will Hothouser, the Cata mounts' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the past six seasons; Tim Beckman, defensive secondary coach for six seasons; and Mark Speir, who coached the defensive line last season, the outside linebackers in 1994, and was a graduate assistant and part-time coach in the 1991, 1992, and 1993 seasons. Hodgin says he plans to name three new assistant coaches "as soon as possible and, hopefully, have them on board by early January." "We had a disappointing season, but we've got a lot of quality young players to build with and we have to do everything we can to get them headed in the right direction," he said. WCU turned its first losing record since 1991 as the Catamounts finished 3-7 this past season. In the three previous seasons, they were 7- 4, 6-5 and 6-5 and were ranked in the NCAA I-AA top 25 poll for 24 weeks in those seasons.
