  • Western Carolinian November 30,19W Features Music Department "Brings In The Spirit Of Christmas" by Noelle Culler StaffReporter According to Mary Kay Bauer of the Western Carolina Music Department, the goal of the 1995 Christmas Concert is to "bring in the spirit of Christmas" to both the University and the surrounding area. December 3 is the date set for the concert, held at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Coulter building. The concert will feature performances from both students and faculty from the entire Music Department. There will be large choir performances and instrumental ensembles, faculty solos, and a variety of smaller ensembles. The pieces to be performed are a combination of sacred and secular Christmas favorites that are jazzy and upbeat. How is this concert any different from other concerts? First of all, even students have to pay to get in. Dr. Bauer explains why: "All of the music concerts sponsored by the music department are free except this one. This is the only funding concert given during the semester. All the money that is raised goes toward music scholarships that will enable the department to bring in the most talented students." This program is very unique because it is performed in a prism style. This means that the performances take place in all parts of the Recital Hall instead of just on stage. There is no waiting between pieces so the concert is fast-moving. At the finale there are two special treats. The Cullowhee Valley Children's Choir, directed by Dr. Diana Fisher, will perform and Chancellor John Bardo will make a guest appearance as Santa Claus. While he is greeting the children the audience can participate in a favorite Christmas carol sing-a-long. The department is hoping to get a full house and hopes to see all of you there. The prices are $6 for adults, $4 for students, and $15 for families. Seats can be reserved by calling 227-7242. WCU Brass Ensembles To Perform Four different Western Carolina University brass instrument ensembles will perform in concert Thursday, Nov. 30. The WCU Trumpet Ensemble, Horn Choir, Trombone Quintet and Tuba/ Euphonium Ensemble will perform in the recital hall of WCU's Coulter Building beginning at 8 p.m. The concert is open to the public free of charge. The program will include selections by Telemann, Francaix, Turini, Purccll and Reicha. For more information, call the WCU music department at (704) 227-7242. Information contributed by O.P.I. One Last Time Minus Us (New Deli, Dec. 6, 8 p.m.) Acclaimed Water Colorist to Visit Asheville Carole Cowan Wilen, one of the South's most exciting juried artists, will appear at Art and Decor Kingdom, the Southeast's largest art gallery, in Asheville, N.C, Saturday, December 2, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thirty years ago, Carole walked through acres of superb paintings and works shown at a major exhibition at Winter Park, Florida. She would return in 1995 as only one of five juried watercolor artists in the show. Upon reaching an impasse with oil painting, she walked away from painting for thirteen years to later return with a vision that pro-^ duced vivid, bold floral watercolor paintings. "I'll paint flowers big,' she declared, " ...and I'll trick people into looking." The trick was much more a treat. Wilen's daylily theme became the commemorative design for the 1995 Dahlonega Wildflower Festival. In 1995, she received the Georgia Watercolor Society Award at a special exhibit in New Bern, North Carolina. Fine galleries in the American Southeast routinely exhibit her watercolors. Carole Cowan Wilen will exhibit 75 to 100 of her original water- colors at Art and Decor Kingdom. The gallery is reached by exiting 1-26 at Exit #2, just West of Asheville, to #799-B Brevard Road, next to Ethan Allen. For more information: (704) 667-4585.
