  • November 9,1995 Western Carolinian 19 Sports WCU Men's Basketball Program 'Bigger and Stronger' \/itr» mroo uraat-r romiinmrt l-.__fy-v—<-» #1-.,-. a . .1 >—i /» . _ _ With three weeks remaining before the season begins, Western Carolina University's men's basketball team is close to where its new head coach wants it to be. "We are a long way from being ready to play, but all the parts are starting to come together," says Phil Hopkins who became WCU's basketball coach last spring. "The combination of six new players and a new coaching staff with new ways of doing things has created a transition period and that makes for extra work on the part of everyone involved. The first test comes in less than two weeks when they host the Charlotte Royals, an AAU team made of ex-college players. WCU opens its season Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 24-25, in the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque. They face Mercer on Friday night and either New Mexico or Texas-Arlington on Saturday night. Despite the loss of Frankie King, 1995 Southern Conference's Player of the Year, now with the Los Angeles Lakers, Hopkins is not calling his first season at the helm of WCU's program a rebuilding season. "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that we can't replace Frankie King or think that I can have the impact on this program that Coach (Benny) Dees had the lasts two seasons, but I am fired up about the potential of the team that we will put on the floor in a few weeks," he stated. Hopkins, 45, had served the past two seasons as an assistant to Dees and was elevated to the head job when Dees retired from coaching last May after two seasons at WCU and 34 seasons in the business. WCU posted its first non-losing record (14-14) since 1986 last season and advanced to the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament for the Mr. Everything by Jason Queen Associate Editor Anquell McCullum team. ern Carolina's men's basketball m has been picked to finish second in the fence's South Division, according to Preseason polls. 6 to di ' he Catamounts were a close second M Jision favorite UT-Chattanooga. Davidson received 43 points, and Marshall received 39. In the ratings of individual players by the coaches, it was clear that Western guard Anquell McCollum is heavily favored to be the third straight Catamount to be named conference Player of the Year. He was the only unanimous selection on the preseason all-conference team. He was also billed as the conference's best offensive player, best pure shooter, best all-around player, and best pro prospect. The Cats open the season next Sunday, November 19, in an exhibition game with the Charlotte Royals in the Ramsey Center. Tip-off is set for 4:30. Both the coaches and the media picked the Lady Cats to finish dead last in the conference. No Lady Cats were picked for the preseason all-conference team. They will open their season Sunday, November 2, with an exhibition game with the Charlotte Royals. This will also be in the Ramsey Center, and tip-off will be at 4:00. The men's and women's basketball teams will each scrimmage for two periods, as well. Courtesy of WCU Athletic Dept. first time ever. Three starters and three other lettermen return from last season's team and have been joined by five junior college players and one high school recruit in preseason practice. The returnees are led by guard Anquell McCollum, the conference's preseason player of the year and fourth leading scorer (17.8 ppg) last season. "Anquell's leadership has been tremendous," said Hopkins. "We have moved him from point guard to the shooting guard spot to make better use of his talents and he has responded well," he added. The other returning starters are center Scott Scholtz and forward Kevin Kullum, Freshman Joey Bryson has been battling Kullum at the running forward spot with transfer Joe Stafford figuring in as the designated shooter. Schultz and 6-9, 235- pound transfer Kerry Wright are battling for the post position. Wright will miss WCU's first five games due to a transfer eligibility rule. Jarvis Graham, a 67" sophomore, is the frontrunner at the big forward spot, but is being challenged by two transfers— 6'4" Lazarus Chennault and 6'8" James Ford. The starting point guard will be sophomore Joel Fleming, who saw action in 22 games last season, or transfer Larry May, who played point and shooting guard at New Mexico Junior College team. Ken Gibson, a 6'3" junior swingman, who has played in 43 games the past two seasons, will be Hopkins' utility player. "We have a bigger and stronger team than last season, but we are not doing the job on the backboards," he noted. Courtesy of WCU Sports Information WITH l._lllll & FRIENDS NOVEMBER 14 9P.M.
