  • July 2nd - 3rd - 4th GREGORY'S BALD AND THUNDERHEAD FROM CADE'S COVE TO SUGARTREE GAP Drive to Willie Myer's place in Cade's cove and leave cars. Hike 4 miles to the State line at the "gant lot" and follow trail to Moore's spring, where we shall make camp for the first night. On Sunday morning we go to Gregory's and Parson's Balds, and that afternoon the trip to Thunderhead will be made, and camp for the night pitched near the site of the old Spense cabin. On Monday morning we reach the top of Thunderhead, then go about 2J/2 miles further to Sugartree Gap, also on the State line. This latter additional excursion is intended for the benefit of hikers who desire to traverse the entire length of the Appalachian Trail during the course of the year. In the afternoon we shall return to Cade's Cove where the cars will be found at the schoolhouse in the upper end of the Cove. There is no other trip in the Smokies like this one. It is an open trail all the way thru park-like woods of oak and chestnut, with a deep sward of mountain grasses. After the deep, dark woods of the eastern part of the range with their dampness and dense undergrowth, this open country with dry trails and beautiful views is a delight to the hiker. The State line 's followed from Gregory's to Thunderhead over knobs as nigh as 4500 feet, and into deep, cool gaps. Cold opnng and Ekaneetlee Gaps are the lowest places on the trail.
