October 5,1995 Western Carolinian 14 Editorials SertftonindiDit The Prozac Papers; Vol.1, No.l- He Came, They Screamed...Brother Birdsong by Tony Taylor Associate Editor Twice a year Gary Birdsong invades WCU to tell the students that they are going to burn in hell for trying to expand their cognitive abilities. How dare we attempt to improve our intellect. Why can't we just read the Bible all day and in our spare time, pray for all the missionaries who are forcing Christianity onto people in the third world. Birdsong is an interesting case study. Anyone who has ever had any involvement with the inbred, white Anglo- Saxon hillbillies that sometime inhabit rural parts of North Carolina will have an instant feeling of deja vu upon meeting Birdsong. It's easy to understand why Birdsong attacks college students-we scare the shit out of him. The mere idea of teaching people to think freely is an abomination to people like Birdsong. Birdsong is a man caught in the past, afraid to face the future - afraid because he realizes he doesn't fit into modern society. Birdsong hits many of the universities in the Southeast twice a year. His message: there is only way to believe, his way. On Tuesday, September 26, Birdsong made this semester's first appearance at Dodson. His message was the same. The reaction by the students was also the same. Once again someone stripped for Birdsong. This year a criminal justice major, complete with shaved head and all, took his shirt off and pulled his down his pants. Thus exposing his rear-end to Birdsong. A certain high-ranking SGA official ranted incessantly and pointlessly with Birdsong for at least 30 minutes. Everyone remarked at the incredible show she put on. I thought to myself, "Maybe these two could form an act." They were certainly better than any of the freaks currently working the talk show circuit. Then this aspiring politician proceeded to make out with someone of her own gender, in true Melissa Etheridge fashion (tongue and all). Acts such as these are designed to freak Birdsong out and discourage him from returning. However, it has the opposite effect on individuals such as Birdsong. I'm quite sure Birdsong returns to his "flock" (and believe it or not he does have one) and shocks them for hours with his tales of decadence on university campuses. Birdsong is a hero to the ignorant congregation he serves. Imagine as he says, "I told them they were all going to Hell. They got mad and started yelling and cussing. The word of God makes these incorrigible young people mad. Some lost their composure and began taking their clothes off in defiance of the word of God. "The youth of America are without morals. College campuses are crawling with lesbians, gays and drug users. They didn't 'want to hear the word of God. But I gave it to them anyway." Think of the many oohs and ahhs he receives when telling his stories. I am quite sure that his congregation treats Birdsong like a prophet. Furthermore, he probably feels like one. The interesting thing about Birdsong is that he enjoys the conflict that he creates. You can see it in his face when he preaches. I actually saw him smile several times while he was arguing with the crowd. Birdsong admitted to one student, "You're right, I won't accept anything they tell me." "They" meaning the students. If we all know Birdsong's motives, why does he attract such a big crowd every year? I ventured into the crowd at 11:00 and at 1:00.1 noticed that some of the students had been there the entire two hours. One healthy-lunged frat boy had been yelling like a schizophrenic in heat for well over an hour. His voice was hoarse but he showed no signs of slowing down. Birdsong and his distorted view of Christianity can keep an audience enthralled for hours on end. The mere mention of condemning someone's soul to Hell can send even the most logical right- brain people into a blind rage. One's beliefs regarding religion and the meaning of life are more sacred to them than anything else. Many wars have been fought over religious differences. Perhaps if Photos by S. Sampson Birdsong were to go to the Middle East and preach his message of hate, then a reaction similar to the one he receives at Western would be warranted. This is the America of 1995. More importantly, it's a college campus. We are supposed to be more educated than Birdsong and his followers. So why is it Birdsong and his illogical message of hate can drive us to forget about our classes, take our clothes off and flirt with homosexuality -just to get back at a man who is several notches below us on a cognitive scale. We should realize by now that no matter what we do or say to Birdsong, his message will stay the same. Perhaps we need to stop giving him the satisfaction that he obviously gets when he attacks us and do the responsible thing: laugh and walk away. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
