Friday, September 16, 1966 SYMBOL of the 250,000 babies born each year in the U.S. with serious birth defects, Lori Ann Wagner, 5, Milwaukee, Wis., is the 1966 National March of r>:„„» Doctor Chilri WNC Offers Much that is now history happened right here where we are living. To find it, one only has to look around and a new world is opened. These small adventures are inexpensive as well as entertaining. A small amount of equipment is necessary to enjoy these outings. A car, a camera, or a pair of boots is about all one needs to be on the way to a different world hat escapes everyday Several of the forest services offer pamphlets and booklets that aid the newcomer in the mountains to find a certain spot These are available by writing the North Carolina Forest Service or even Hunter Library has a fairly complete section devoted tohliis area. Whether it be escape or just curiosity, the tcps are well worth the time involved. In most cases, the first trip is only the beginning of max more. Chances are the question will change from "What's there to do?" to a happier and more pleasing question "When do we start?" One of the most commonly heard questions at Western Carolina College is ■ What is there to do?" Located in a valley and not being near any large towns perhpas Western is at a disadvantage. However, one would be amazed at the vast areas of interest that are just within miles of the campus. Take any road away from the campus and one can find many new sights and experiences that are not ordinarily visited by the masses. Fo r instance.there is Clingman's Dome located in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park in Tennessee which is only about thirty five miles from Western. This is the highest point in Tennessee and from the tower, which is located on the dome, one has a spectacular view of the mountains and country that surround the area. Closer still is scenic Cherokee, North Carolina. Although the tourist season is closed one is still able to imagine the events which took place there many years ago. The Oconaluftee River which runs through the area is a trout fisherman's paradise. Only a few miles from our own college campus there is another unusual place of interest, Judaculla Rock. Indian etching of unknown oriRin covers it, and as of yet, the etching has not been deciphered. Many find the writing quite interesting and try to decide the meaning behind the symbols and drawings. For the fisherman and out doorsman of Western, there is Bear Lake. Fishing, boating, hiking, and all types of game are to be found in the peaceful lake area. Many have already discovered how enjoyable an outing at Bear Lake. can be..
