THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday. January 9,1969 Cats Downed By High Point By DON LUCAS A key steal of a Western Carolina University pass with a minute and 20 seconds left by Eugene Littles broke a Catamount rally and enabled High Point College to pull out a 91-86 Carolinas Conference victory over Western here Tuesday night Littles, who led the Panthers with 26 points, broke through and picked off the pass with Western within three points, 87-84, and drove to score and virtually seal the victory. The Catamounts punea wiin- in three after being down by as many as 14 early in the second half. Greg Wittman, Western's 6-8 forward, led all scorers with 28 while Gene McConnell fired in 18 for the Cats. At the half, the Cats trailed 54-44 but it took a High Point rally with 2:29 remaining to preserve the winning margin. The score was tied seven times in the first half before two free throws by Littles and two by Ron Homey, a follow by Jim Picka and two layups resulting from a Catamount miscues pushed a 44-44 tie to a 54-44 mark at the half. For the first 17 minutes the Catamounts played the league- leading Panthers even, matching them point for point with neither team able to lead by more than three points until the last two and a half minutes of the stanza. Western jumped ahead 41-38 with 4:59 left in the opening half but Danny Witt's two long jumpers kept the Panthers close until they tied it at 44-44. The foul line proved to be the difference as the Catamounts committed 31 fouls as opposed to 16 for High Point Six Cats had four personals each and McConnell w*ent out on fouls with 2:01 remaining. The Cats, who return home Thursday night against Appalachian State, outscored High Point from the field, 37-29. High Point had a 36-33 edge in rebounds. Cols Host Mountaineers Of Appalachain Saturday Night Western Carolina takes to the hardwood-in Reid Gym tonight as they face the Mountaineers of Appalachian State University. The Catamounts will go into the contest with a 4-6 record, while the Mounties will enter with a slightly poorer 3-6 record. The Appalachian attack is spearheaded by an outstanding guard, Preston WUliams, and a sharp-shooting center, Allan Price. WUliams, deadly from the outside on jump shots, scored 37 points against Pfeiffer this year, and Price leads the team with a 22.1 scoring average. Coach Bob Light's Apps are known to be a comeback team and their record—just as Western Carolina's—doesn't show their true potential. ine Mounties lost to the Citadel at the Citadel court by only two points, and lost to powerful East Tennessee by only 17 points on the ET hardwood. Jim 'Judger's uats, led by Captain Greg Wittman, are expecting to see a verydeliverate ASU offense and a team that is potentially strong on rebounding. The Catamounts will probably feature a big lineup--Wittman, Greu Robison, Greg Kinman, > * ■ i ■ . WCU G Wittman 11 McConnell 9 Robison 4 Wright 3 Kinman 1 Brown 6 Litz 2 Brinkman l Haskell 0 Totals 37 and freshman Henry BrinK- man—for both offensive and defensive strength. Brinkman, who saw action against the very close but losing contest with undefeated High Point, should be a handy man under the boards for Western. Sharp-shooting Gene McConnell will see starting action, get this, possibly at the guard position to put a bit more size in the Catamout attack. Guards Mai Brown and Woody Wright will also see much action in the rivalry-filled clash.
