  • 6 Western Carolinian June 16, 1994 Blake Frizzell Editor-in-Chief Photo By Justin Menickelli Anderson says Good bye, Thanks Dear Editor: Robert Penn Warren once said, "There are very fundamental compensations in teaching if you'rre in the right kind of place and have the right kind of students." In regard to my teaching at WCU, I suppose one out of two isn't so bad. Thanks, students, for making my rough ride here worthwhile. Ben Anderson Late of Communication and Theatre Arts The Western Carolinian is the student newspaper of Western Carolina University, produced entirely by students. •The opinions expressed on the editorial page are not the opinions of the W C or Western Carolina University. »A11 input and correspondence should be addressed to:Editor, Western Carolinian;PO Box 66, Cullowhee, NC 28723 • All submissions will be considered, but the WC reserves the right to refuse publication of unsuitable material and the right to edit for brevity and clarity. Editorial Brief New Exultations, Fruit Loops Well, I guess I underestimated my very first paper! I thought because it was summer, I would never in a million years fill up 8 pages. What I am especially proud of (excuse me if I gloat), is I had not only exceptionally nosy reporters and photographer but a talented, opinionated columnist. Hello and welcome to what hopes to be a regular feature of the Western Carolinian. I have a lot of ideas for this column, one of which will be to focus on people, places, and things related to WCU. Some of these will be dealt with seriously, some not. This distinction will be left up to you, the readers, and the Editor of the WC. Any feedback (negative or positive) will be appreciated. But, hey, enough formalities, let's get down to this weeks topic... Radio Radio (Power 91 Progress Report, pt. 1) Just in case some of you haven't flipped on a radio lately, let it be announced: Cullowhee's campus radio station WWCU (Power 91) is back on the air. Michael Whalen is sitting in the General Manager's chair with Gary Leigh assuming the role of Program Director. Todd Midgett (known to his legion of fans as "Todzilla" — more on him later) is Assistant Program Director along with J.J. Fahey as Traffic Director and Christy Phillips as News Director. Is the Summer crew better? Have any major changes taken place? Is WWCU serving its listeners adequately : Let's See.... For what it's worth, I've been recording Power 91 off and on since May 31st, the first day of broadcast, trying to listen to as many jocks and shows as my schedule allows. I realize that the programming is still up in the air during the first week of operations and that one of the time-honored axioms of radio is "Nothing Is Permanent," so whatever comments I make will seem somewhat premature and irrelevant. 12:00 p.m. May 31st, first day of classes. I'm listening to the Rock N' Roll diner (11a.m. - 1p.m., Monday through Friday) hosted by Rich Gantt. So far so good, not playing anything by the Cullowhee in the summer is not always less exciting! I cut my space(& the Crossowrd, sorry) quite a bit because we had so much good stuff to share this month. My only regret about this paper is that I didn't make it 12 pages. So, let me know what you think; comments, critiques, critism, are all welcome here! I hope you enjoy, see you in July, have a great Summer! Fruit Loops to all those wonderful people who have helped me this month. Correction: In April, I wrote an Editorial about LuLu's xvhich stated they closed on a particular night at 9 p.m. They infact, closed at 8:30 p.m. Word to the wise: Check the door, before dining. The Smoking Section Photo By Justin Menickelli Social Commentary By Williams BeeGees and that's always a good sign. This show has always been WWCU's saving grace, at times being the only halfway listen able show on their schedule. The Diner's audience is huge — not only because it goes down well with the High School kids (the majority of WWCU's listening populace) who like hard modern rock, but the 20-50 year old's who enjoy the Classic Rock that occasionally gets played. Rich reads and announces well, he has a likable radio persona, his segues are very good, and he picks out some interesting items for his shows. About the only improvements needed would be if Rich were given a little more flexibility and was allowed to bring material from his own collection to incorporate into his shows. Otherwise, not bad. 5:00 p.m. May 31st, I turn on the radio and hear Todzilla (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 4:00-7:00) an hour into his show. Todzilla (a.k.a. Todd Midgett) occupies that space known to program directors as "Afternoon Drive- Time," which is when most people listen to the radio. The other radio "hot-spot" is 6-9 a.m., known as "Morning Drive- Time." Todzilla's audience is mostly teenagers, judging from the music that he plays and the calls that he gets. I personally can't stand the music he plays (mostly Top 40 and dance music) but the fact that there's people who like the stuff says a lot about the importance of the niche which Todzilla is helping to fill...and damned if it doesn't actually serve its purpose. Todzilla scores big points with his segues and announcing. His reading of News and PSA's is very good, too. Where I run into trouble with him is his on-air persona, especially when people call up and he decides to air the calls. I can't figure out if he's being flippant and sarcastic or if he's making and attempt at humor. If he's trying 'to be funny then he's coming across as pretentious and cute, a little too witty for his own good, If he's trying to be flippant and sarcastic then he's succeeding but he's coming across to the caller and listener as if he's having a laugh at their expense. I suggest that Todzilla conduct a couple of air-checks and listed to himself and work on his . persona more, figure out the kind of personality he wants to be and how it relates to the people who call up. 7:00-10:00 p.m. May 31st. A guy named Butt Naked (Mark Edwards) follows Todzilla so I say "What the hell...," kickback my heels, and listened to his entire show. Like Todzilla's, Butt's music mix is mostly Dance Music and Rap with a couple of Rock tunes thrown in per hour, I like the Rap music a lot but what pisses me off is that Butt doesn't announce the group or the song that he's playing so I can't figure who is doing that, which would be very important if I actually wanted to go out and buy some music that I heard on Butt's show. I can tell that Power 91's wonderful playlist is wearing a bit thin on Butt: By 8:00, 7 of his 13 songs are rock but by 9:00 he's back to the tried-and-true format. A little more rock and roll would definitely help the format of this particular time period since most young people are either studying or are going into "party mode," the Rock'n' Roll balancing the Dance Music and Rap.
