  • Page 18 Sports September 16,1993 Western Carolinian This Weeks Picks... Derek Smolik StaffReporter Last week was a good start, but this week, it gets interesting. We have a full slate of Southern Conference action, including the Georgia Southern at Marshall match-up, which should be good. Also, Western tries to erase the memory of the last game. We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto-Thank God!! #7Georgia Southern at#l Marshall: The Eagles looked impressive in thei r openi ng game, but lackluster (offensively) against The Citadel. That's got to be a worry for Head Coach Tim Stowers as he prepares to take on the Herd. Marshall's ranked number one, and that isn't an accident. They've been impressive in their first two games, and it doesn't sound likely to me that they'd let up now, especially at home. Marshall 31 Georgia Southern 17 The Citadel at #12 Western: The loud noise you heard a week and a half ago wasn'ta sonic boom; it was reality coming down hard on the Cat's football team in the form of the Kansas Jayhawks. How will they react against their traditionally troublesome opponent from Charleston? Well, I doubt that they'll beat them as badly as they should, but they'll win. WCU 27 Citadel 17 ETSU at VMI: Well, it's hard to get a bead on either of these teams. ETSU has just concluded its tour of the Southern Ath letic Conference, and the Keydets have a loss to Richmond. That's not much to go on, but 1 know this, VMI doesn't have enough talent to hang with some SAC teams, much less Southern Conference teams. ETSU 20 VMI 9 Wofford at #24 Furman: Could the Division II Terriers take two Southern Confer ence wins in One year? Well....nah. Furman isn't Citadel, and Wofford isn't thatgood. Wofford should do pretty well in Divison 11, but Furman has a solid team overall. ForgetwhatTechdid to them last Saturday. Furman 28 Wofford 16 Last weeks's record: 3-0 Record for season: 3-0 Volleyball drops four straight Curtis Metzger Staff Reporter It was a rough road trip for Western Carolina University's volleyball team as it lost all three matches in Western Kentucky's Hilltopper Classic this past weekend. With a cumulative attack percentage of .066, the Catamounts were crushed by 3-0 counts to Western Kentucky, Xavier (Ohio) and Tennessee Tech. Errors and inexperience played a big part in the disappointing performance for the Cats. Jennifer Ross, anall Southern Conference player, tallied just 24 kills in the three matches (after having a 28 kill match against Converse last Wednesday) but still posted a respectable .236 attack percentage. Ross currently has 1104 career kills and needs just 487 more to break WCU's all-time kill record of 1590, held by Regina Brown (1987-1990). Ross is currently averaging 12.1 kills per match and 3.54 kills per game. The Catamounts also dropped a match against Clemson Tuesday night 9- 15, 6-15, 2-15. This brings their overall record to 2-5. Their first Southern Conference game will be against Furman on October 15. This weekend WCU will travel to Auburn, Alabama for the Auburn Classic. After that, they will continue on their 13 game road trip with a contest against UNC-Asheville next Tuesday. Last week's match against Converse Col lege wil 1 be the Ca ts only home match in September. The Cats next home match is on October 8, when North Carolina A & T comes to Reid Gym to play the Catamounts in a non-conference volleyball match. The Wachovia College Account.
