  • luebUdy, UCtODer \C, iy/1 I Mt Wr_5lt.KN LMKULIIUHII i Harriers place 8th in Tenn. Invitational Bailey takes 10th slot Last Saturday, the Western Carolina cross country went to Knoxville, Tennessee where they competed in the Tennessee Invitational Cross Country meet. In a field of 17 teams the WCU harriers finished eighth as a team with Ben Bailey coming in tenth in the individual standings. The competition took place on the 6.0 mile NCAA course at Knoxville, Tenn. The track con" ditions at the beginning of the race were poor with mud from recent rains, then rain began falling during the event. The University of Indiana, defending Big Ten champ and NCAA contender, won the event on a team score of 47 points, Following in second place with 56 points was defending Ohio Valley Champion East Tennessee State University. The University of Alabama, runner-up at last year's SEC finals, took the third slot with 100 team points, while last year's SEC champion, the University of Kentucky finished fourth with 144 points. Western Conference Champion, Air Force Academy scored 146 points to come in fifth. Sixth and seventh places were a tight squeeze, as Missouri Valley Conference Champion, the University of Cincin nati took sixth with 186 points while the University of Tennessee was close behind having scored 188 points to take seventh. Western Carolina University nailed down the eighth place spot with 211 team points, followed closely by Western Kentucky University in ninth position. Also finishing the event were Cumberland (247 points), Furman (313 points), Baptist College (320), Tennessee Tech (420 points), Milligan College (455 points), Carson-Newman (462 points), Eastern Kentucky University (3 runners finished), and Top-of-the-World Track Club (three runners finished) respectively. Out of the 150 runners in the race, WCU's Ben Bailey fin ished tenth on a 31:14 time, with Terry Helms m twenty- ninth place at 32:26. Jerry Greene was Western Carolina's next finisher, in fifty-first position with a 33:15 time. Steve Fleming came in 60th on a 33:35 time, while Tom Gibbons (33:37) finished 61st; Randy Helderman (33:43), 66thi Steve Hill (35:25), 87th; Mike Prozialeck (35:35). 88th; Far- reU Parker (35:54) 100th; Nick Frey (36:14), 104th. The fact that the harriers lost to seven teams and finished ahead of seven teams gives them an 18-8 record thus far this season. The cross country team's next competion will be on October 16 when they travel to Carrollton, Georgia for the West Georgia Invitational. The meet begins at 11:00 a.m. Furman outlasts WCU 21-14 Cats complete frustrating five CLOSED SUNDAY, COURT HILL INNif f "We didn't play that bad. Several individual mental lap= ses, both offensively and defensively, and our inability to take advantage of several scoring opportunities led to our defeat." So said WCU head coach Bob Waters about the Catamounts' shocking loss to Furman 21=14 last Saturday night in Green~ ville. Waters reportedly felt that his Catamounts had played a very sloppy game against Fur~ man, but after reviewing the game films changed his mind. The Paladins shut out the Cats in the second half to cap what has been a frustrating five- week road swing for Western. WCU, who has not played a home game to date, now shows a dismal 1=4 record. All of the five games have been against NCAA competition, including Jacksonville State who Is at present both NAIA and NCAA, Western has held leads as late as the third quarter in three of its four losses, but has managed only seven points in the final period while yield= Ing 41 to the opposition. To add complications, start= ing WCU fullback Eddie Sveum has reported out for the season with a collapsed vertebra sus= tained on a "cheap shot" by a Furman defender. However, Monday it was reported that Sveum was much improved and the "collapsed vertebra" diagnosis was mis- I Soccer today Today, at 3:00 p.m., the Western Carolina soccer team will try to get back into the winning column as they go a= gainst the Furman Paladins here in Cullowhee. Last week, the Catamount hooters suffered their first loss of the season, as they fell to Davidson, 2-1, giving them a season record of 2-L TED'S RESTAURANT R(B STEAK taken. Two other injured Cata- mounts=-split end Jerry Gaines and cornerback Jimmy Laugh- ridge are doubtful starters for the coming HOME gameagalnst Mississippi College. On the bright side: Otis Mcintosh, returning to his usual form, rushed for 109 of WCU's 120 yards and scored his thirtieth career touchi ^i / Gaines caught four passes for 110 yards, one being a 72-yard scoring bomb. Cornerback Mark Call is was outstanding on defense with several key stops.
