The Southern Highlands opens its arms to you and its people will join in giving you vacation pleasure that you will not soon forget. These Highlanders are a people of intense individuality; the strong and violent independence that they fought to win for themselves and their homes made them forsake all the comforts of civilization. The people of the mountains live by farming, hunting, fishing and cattle raising. It is only by the establishment of this area into a National Park that these original pioneering people have endured, otherwise the last glimpse of the frontier and the American wilderness would long ago have been swallowed by advancing man-made civilization. Many famous names have come from the families of the Great Smoky Mountains: Clarke, Admiral Farragut, Sergeant York, Andrew Jackson, Abe Lincoln. The white population of the region still exhibits the pristine ruggedness and self-sufficiency of the pioneer period shortly after the American Revolution.
