The battle for second through fourth should be interesting. The Sons of Mayberry, Injured Reserve and Western Carolinian are jockeying for position. Green League Despite the fact that the Green League had only six teams, it tied for the most opening day forfeits with two. That left only the Regulators-Rebels game on the first day, which the Regulators won. Silver League Bigtime ran out to the early lead in the Silver League wi th a 6-3 win over The Big Six. The Yammies, Mudcats and Drillers areall in a tight battle for second. Purple League • Through the first day of play in the Purple League Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Pi Kappa Alpha are all tied for the lead at 1-0. Gold League Sigma Nu, Kappa Alpha and Tau Kappa Epsilon all opened with wins in the first day of plav. International League Sigma Phi Epsilon 'B', Lambda Chi Alpha 'B', and Pi Kappa Alpha 'B' all opened the season with two wins in the first week of International League play. Blue League The highest scoring game of the season occurred between Hair Club For Men and Skywalker as the Club won 19- 17. Hooterville Depressed pounded the BSU 'B' club in their win to keep pace with Hair Club. Red League The Posse took their first two games of the season to take a half game lead over Rick Flair's Finest, BSU 'A', and Nothing Fancy. The Posse edged the Big Dogs to stay undefeated after a forfeit. White League Two forfeits cut into the first day of play in the White League, but the two games that were played were competitive. Hazardous barely topped the Bootleggers by al0-9 count. Orange League Southern Comfort and the 69ers 'A' team both looked good in cruising to opening day wins in the Orange League. The 69ers topped Aces High 11-6, while Southern Comfort beat the Surge. Women's Leagues Gold League Absolutely Scotch topped the Nerdles, 10-7, in the game played in the first day of Gold League play. Purple League The Jammers beat BSU by a score of 12-4 in the first game of Purple League play. The only other game in the first day was a forfeit to Cold Chillin'. Sorority League Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Xi Delta are the only undefeated teams in the Sorority League after two days of play; Rugby team plays injury-free match against Asheville Curtis Metzger Staff Reporter The ambulance seemed to move in on cue as it rolled up alongside the playingfield to begin WCURugby Club's 1993 season in a home game against Asheville this past Saturday. But the sirens never sounded in an injury-free game, which is rare, that ended in an Asheville victory, 78-5. What did sound at times was the crowd of approximately 100 people on the sidelines. It was shortly before the second halfwhen the familiar red firetruck £ Tot«Uy Tuesday With Singer/Songwriter Sponsored by Trie Western Carolinian and Pizza Hut of Cullowhee Costs S1 students I S3 others • Free Pizza and Dri could be seen rolling towards the field with its welcome "insta-crowd" loosely attached in the various nooksand crannys of the engine's framework. Shortly afterwards a small enthusiastic mob appeared on the sidelines and began to cheerfor WCU. A suddenburstof energy seemed to fill a tiring WCU team, but it was not enough to overcome an already 48 point deficit. "They wore us down in the second half," said Ron Venturella. Despite the loss, WCUdid make history when Chris Dawson scored their first ever tri (equivalant to a touchdown in football) against Asheville's Rugby Club. * "I'm proud of these guys," said Venturella, the team captain. The team no longer plays on the running track's infield but on the field belowthetenniscourts. The track has just been resurfaced and in rugby, the cleats have specialized steel-tipped spikes. "They're afraid they may tear up the track," said Venturella. The team has a home game Saturday against St. Andrews at 5pm. Anyone interested in joining can call Venturella at 293-3955. ^W-eFF(cleMt ^HtiN< ^5 tAiuio^ toviS oF SUL^Up3 d\o*\<*e, 202 M'lUUoM Idnc, of (j&boti d\oMe AHd 6CQCO0lt>H$ ^ vi\W<^erJ ox\deS coulcI be eutA'iMAt-ed eveRY yeAR Yoofc -eves woNt Noti&e fat diFFefcewce.
