He was one of six chosen out of 60 to attend the Yerkes Summer Student Assis- tantship program. Sugg worked as a lab assistant in the neuro- science department under Dr. Ronald Boothe. At the end of the ten week experience, he received three hours credit as a co-op internship. Sugg's main job during his internship was to experiment on the eyes of a rhesus monkey. He prepared the tiny opaque contact lenses that infant monkeys wear as part of a study to determine the best post-surgical treatment approaches for human infants born with congenital cataracts. "I did a photography experiment to detect strabismus or crossed eyes," said Sugg. "The flash reflections from the cornea of each monkey being studied would be measured indistances from thepupilsusinga ruler." In another experiment, the Operant Condition Experiment, the monkey looks ata screenwithbars on either the right or the left sideof the screen. Then the monkey pulls a lever that corresponds to the bars. If the monkey is right, he wi II receive a banana flavored pellet. If the monkey is wrong, he will receive nothing. Another experiment tested monkey's eyes with contact lenses. The research proved that some lenses corrected vision, others simulated blindness, and some lenses simulated a cataract. Other experiments were done on primate behavior, respiratory, and other anatomical features. Sugg said this is one of the best co-ops that any student may enter. He also said theexpe- rience help him making a career choice. "This was an opportunity of a lifetime," Sugg said. "Workingona real scientific project in a laboratory setting opened my eyes to a whole new realm of possible career opportunities that I may want to pursue upon graduation/' said Sugg. pep RAlFcOMERr 7pm - U.C.Lawn September 19 Country Western Show September 18 Your choice of two ,. activities: Kayakinq7Canoemg Rappelling/ Mountain Biking *.« p"| Cost $7 students / $15 others ^^r.p1*© 9am #?^8ain - Costs $8 students/ $16 others Price includes lunch, transportation by DELTA RHYTHM BBQ starts at 5:00pm, Band starts at 6:00pm free with meal card / $4.50 without meal card RAMSEY CENTER Sponsored by The employees of the Ashley Corp.
