The wide variety of sports offered this year include, softball, volleyball, flag foot- ball, tennis, water polo, bowling, badmitton, floop ball, skills events and more. "Any student can participate if he is an undergraduate enrolled in at least six credithours," Assistant Intramural Director, Debbie Schwartz said. "Graduate students must be carrying no less than three credit hours to participate." Faculty and staff are welcome also, but there are some limitations so it is advised that they call the Intramural Office before joining or forming a team. If a student wants to form a team for competition, theyjustneed to get together enough players and register with the Intramural Office before the deadline. If a student wants to compete in an individual event, he or she just needs to show up the day of the event. The only exceptions being wrestling and arm wrestling because the participant needs to weigh-in first. If students just want to join a team then they can put their names on an individual team's list. The list is available for any team that needs players. Also, if enough individuals sign up on the list, then the Intramural Office will form a team from it. Once sign-ups end, an individual on the list may begin calling teams up and asking if they need players. "This usually works out better," said Schwartz,"because they can talk to you, and if they have practices, then you can go down there." According to Schwartz, women's teams are always looking for players so it is relatively easy for individual women to join a team. The Women's Intramural Program is broken down into two leagues, a sorority league and an independent league. The men's league incorporates a point system. Teams in the International League Fraternity B compete with the entire school year for points and must enter all events. Teams in the Fraternity A league don't compete for points. Teams only play other teams in their league until they reach the All-Campus Playoffs. The winners of each sport receive All-Campus T-shirts, and the winners at the end of the year receive trophies as well. Schwartz said they've hired all their softball umpires for the season, but anyone interested in refereeing football should call her. "And we're always looking for work- study students," she added. Schwartz also said she's expecting the Shick Super Hoops 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament to be back again this year. The winners at WCU will go on to play other teams from around the state. The regional winners then play teams from around the nation. Softball skills competition brings out the best in students Curtis Metzger StaffReporter The turnout was above average as the Western Carolina University intramurals program kicked off its 1993 season with a softball skills competition. Surrounded by an air of friendly competition, students compared their talents in various events. Jason Ross (Sigma Nu) won the Fraternity League Division with 238 points. He threw the softball 85 feet, hit it 95 feet, ran the bases in 11.67 seconds and put nine out of 10 pitches through the wooden frame. Tony Kee (Sigma Chi) was second with 232 points. In the International League Kurt Houser (Sigma Phi Epsilon "B") placed first by bringing in 232 points. John Ledbetter (Sigma Nu "B") was second with 194 points Johnny Wilson (Hooterville Express) won the National League with 201 points, while Todd Winn (Son's of Mayberry) came in second with 195 points. The winners of the Men's Independent League were Chad Wingler (Drillers) with 210 points and Jimmy Upchurch (Drillers) who secured second with 203 points. The Women's Sorority League winners were first place, Laura Parker (Phi Mu), with 213 points and second place, Tricia Nalepa (Phi Mu), with 212 points The Women's Individual winners were Valerie Simmons (no team listed) in first with 193 points, and Pamela Brown (Nerdles) took second place, scoring 177 points.
