  • Western Carolinian September 9,1993 Page 13 Sports Volleyball team off to "very competitive" start Derek Smolik StaffReporter Western Carolina's women's volleyball team won one out of two games in the Carolina Classic Volleyball Tournament last weekend in Columbia, South Carolina. Sophomore Catherine Sawyers and Senior Jennifer Ross led the team to a win over Mercer and a close loss to the University of South Carolina. Sawyers had 18 kills and only five errors to post a .342 attack percentage for the tournament. Ross led the team with 28 kills, though her 14 errors left her with a .233 percentage. "CatherineSawyers played middle, which is a new position for her... she made some smart, very athletic plays," Head Coach Trish Howell said. In their Saturday match against Mercer, the Cats controlled the tempo throughout, but errors allowed Mercer to keep the score close. The Cats committed a total of 18 errors in games one and three as they won the games 15-12 and 15-10. But Western only had two "We weren't as sharp early... we lost most of our points against Mercer, they didn'twin them," Howell also said "A team goal is to cut out errors." One reason for optimism is the fact that the Cats played well despite injuries to two players. Emily Tillotson is still out with an achilles tendon injury, and Rebecca Ballard is playing despite continuing knee problems. The line-up consisted of two freshman, three sophomores and a senior. In Friday's match against South Carolina, the Cats played well against •the hard hitting Gamecocks, but fell by the scores of 15-13,14-16,15-8 and 15- 12. "I was very pleased with our performance," Howell said "We were very competitive." The Cats go on the road this weekend to Western Kentucky for a tournament. WCU is scheduled to play the host, Western Kentucky, Friday night at 7:30pm. On Saturday the Cats will take on Xavier (Ohio) at 2pm and Tennessee Tech at 5pm. The Cats defeated Converse College last night in Cullowhee. The Cats struggled throughout, making numerous errors, but were able to hang on and win by scores of 12-15,15-1,13-15,15-7, and 15-12. Howell, though obviously displeased with the Cats performance said that, "Wearealways happy withawin." Leonard Harris was the All-Campus runner-up with an average of 151.3; his high game was 159. was on track to defend his title after he rolled a 172 and 158 to start off. But Lovin developed a blister on his rolling thumb and faded to a last game 110 and finished fourth with a 146.7 average, Lovin's 172 was the second highest game of the competition. There were 29 competitors in all in this year's competition, which Assistant Intramural Director Debbie Schwartz said was normal. "We had the same amount as last year. .. it's hard to get people out that early in the semester," Schwartz said. Among the participants in the competition was the Lyman brothers, Scott and Dan. Scott, a member of the Catamount baseball team for the last four . years topped his brother with an average of 142.7. Dan finished well below with a 121.
