  • Volume 59 Issue 1 June 17,1993 Western Carolinian Page 5 Ramble Mountain presented at AshevIUe Folk Art Center Ann Thompson performs in Ramble Mountain along with Tony Tallent. (photo by Rick Woods) Rick Woods Contributing Writer Ramble Mountain is a two-act musical drama bringing to life a "forgotten Appalachia." Written and directed by Bryson City's Tony Tallent, the play is a patchwork quilt of dramatic and humorous scenes and original songs. Based on stories his grandmother told him of her life as a child, young woman and then as a mother in the mountains of Swain County the play is,. "About remembering and keeping alive the heritage of a way of life that is being forgotten," says author and performer, Tony Tallent. Ramble Mountain originated as a traveling show, and has been performed since the spring of '92 at schools, resorts, community clubs, elder hostels, and other art gatherings from Greensboro to Chicago. It is sponsored and promoted by Catch the Spirit of Appalachia, a non-profit cultural arts center located in Tuckaseigee. Though the show was originally intended for adults, the performers have found that small children are often captivated by scenes like "Washing Potatoes" and "Mae's Christmas." For Tony Tallent, expanding the show into a two-hour play seemed like a logical "next step," given that the show had received such a good response. Both Tony Tallent and Ann Thompson are longtime members of area stages and productions. They have worked together for six years have designing and performing children's programs at Bryson City's Marianna Black Library. Ramble Mountain transcends the stereotypes of "hillbillies" to bring to the light the humor, patience and faith of individuals whose lives passed in anonymity in the shadows of the Southern Appalachians. The play will be performed by Tony Tallent and Ann Thompson on June 18, 19, and 20 and July 2,3, and 4 at Asheville's Folk Art Center (704) 298-7928 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinee at 2:00. Admission is $8.00; $5.00 for senior citizens and children 12 and under.
