  • Western Carolinian Page 6 Volume 59 Issue 1 June 17,1993 Cats win one in Regional Baseball Tournament Derek Smolik Sports Writer Western Carolina University's Baseball team lost in the NCAA South Regional Tournament for the second year in a row, despite beating the number two seed, Miami Hurricanes. Designated hitter, pitcher, and third baseman Phillip Grundy led the way again for the Cats. In the 1992 Regional in Florida Grundy hit two homeruns and drove in 10 runs in leading the Cats to the runner-up spot. During this year's tournament in Baton Rouge, LA, Grundy hit two more homeruns and drove in five runs in only two games. Grundy was named to the all-tournament team. After a loss to eventual national champion Louisiana State University, the Cats came back just 11 hours later against the Hurricanes. The Cats scored just two runs against the Tigers on Thursday night, but equaled that total in the first inning of the game against the Hurricanes. Roy Hurst singled up the middle with two outs to give the Cats a quick 2-0 lead. During the next inning Western came right back and expanded their lead. A throwing error on the pitcher allowed Rodney Hennon to reach base and Marc Strieker to score. Jody Henson then came up and hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring MikePritchard. Two batters later Grundy came up and singled in Hennon to make the score 5-0. A single by Henson and a ground out by Hennon made the score 7-2 after three innings and the game looked to be over. The Hurricanes made a run at the Cats and cut the lead to 8-5. Grundy iced the game in the eighth inning with a two run homer over the left field wall to make the final score 10-5. Sophomore Jason Beverlin took the mound for the Cats and tied a school record with his twelfth win of the season. Beverlin pitched the first nine inning complete game of his career. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out 11 in earning the win. Western played against Kent (formerly Kent State) Saturday afternoon for a chance to play in the championship round of the tournament. Grundy gave the Cats a 2-0 lead in the first inning against the Golden Flashes, but Kent pounded out 12 hits and downed the Cats 8-5. The Cats had defeated the Golden Flashes 14-1 in last year's Regional. LSU used two key Western errors to score unearned runs and Mike Sirotka held the Catamount bats in check for a 7- 2 win in the first round of the tournament. The second round win marked the second year in a row that the baseball team has won a Regional Tournament game. The Cats have only won four other games in their history in Regional Tournaments. Grundy, Tweedlie taken in Baseball Draft Derek Smolik Sports Writer Cats'pitchers Phillip Grundy and Brad Tweedlie were picked in the recent Major League Baseball draft on June 3, and both have signed contracts with their teams. Grundy, an All-Southern Conference performer this year and Southern Conference Tournament Most Valuable player, was taken in the fourth round by the Kansas City Royals. Grundy was the second pick of the Royals, who did not have any selections in the second or third rounds. Grundy was recently named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-American second team as a designated hitter. Grundy, a junior from Kentucky, compiled a 24-16 record and a 3.09 earned run average in three years at Western Carolina. He also struck out 263 batters in 294 innings during his career. In the 1992 South II Regional tournament in Florida, Grundy shut out the home-standing Florida State Seminoles and hit two homeruns beforebeingnamed to the All-Tournament team. Grundy signed a contract last week with the Royals and was assigned to their Northwest League Team in Eugene, Oregon. Tweedlie was selected in the third roundofthedraft. The6-foot-2-inchright hander was inconsistent in posting a record of 2-3 with an 8.79 ERA. Most of the attention Tweedlie garnered was because of his fastball, which was clocked as high as 96 mph. Tweedlie signed a contract with Cincinnati and was assigned to their team in Billings, Montana. RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS ONE COURSE THAT COULD CHANGE THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE.
