Western Carolina's Women's Tennis Team placed eighth in the women's Southern Conference Tournament on April 17-18 at Davidson, NC. The Lady Cats had a tough first day, winning only two matches. But they came back on the second day and won four matches to finish with 18 points for the tournament. There were some individual highlights for the lady Cats, though. After losing her first match, Lisa Ashe won her second round match 7-5,6-1 over Jenifer Treloar of Marshall. Ashe lost in the fifth place match though, and had to settle for a sixth place finish in the number two singles. In the number three singles Kristen Maxey came back from a first round loss to win her second round match over Samantha Miss of Georgia Southern 6-4, 6-4. Maxey lost in the fifth place match to Peggy Wein of Appalachian State University. Karri Jackson defeated Jenny Davis of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga 7-6,4-6,6- 4 to take seventh place in the number four singles. Ashe and Laura Waitsman had to setde for sixth place in the number one doubles as they lost to Kimberly Nance and Sarah Heer of Davidson 7-5, 6-2. Maxey and Jackson placed seventh with a three set win over Christy Gill and Jenny Davis of UT-Chattanooga. • The WCU men's tennis team will participate in the Southern Conference men's tennis tournament on April 23-25 in Davidson, NC. • The Western Carolina Uni versity Athletics Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its annual induction. The 1993 hall of fame will be inducted during ceremonies on October 30. Nominations will be accepted through May 15,1993. The basic criteria for nominations are that the nominee (1) must have distinguished himself/herself through outstanding performances while representing Western Carolina University as a student-athlete, coach, or in a support capacity; (2) must have made significant contributions to the enrichment of the athletics program; and (3) five years must have elapsed since the nominee participated in or was associated with the WCU athletics program, except in the case of posthumous awards. Official nomination forms can be obtained or nominations can be submitted by writing the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame, c/o Athletics Department, Western Carolina University, Ramsey Center, Cullowhee, NC 28723. The telephone number is 227- 7338. Inductees are selected by a 10-member committee composed of representatives from the university's alumni association, the Catamount Athletes Association, the Catamount Club, the faculty athletics committee, the athletics administration, and the media. Head Coach Danny Williamson was pleased with his teams' performance stating, "I thought our men and women did an outstanding job under the circumstances. We left here Saturday morning under very pleasant weather condiUons, and then had to compete in Boone in the snow and bitter cold. Even though it was demoralizing to have to endure the conditions, I thought our teams did an excellent job." The men's team captured two first place finishes in the meet. Robert Tucker won the triple jump . with a leap of 46' 7". Len Henke won the 400-meter dash with a timeof 49.58. Shawn Miller placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a clocking of 14.93. Reggie Allison added a second place finish in the long jump with ajump of 22' 1/4". Rita Roberts led the women's squad, winning two events. She won the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:44.98 and the 5000-meter in a time of 18:22. Zondra Johnson threw the shot put a distance of 40' 3" to win that event. Debbie Evans won the javelin with a throw of 113' 5". Von Ross leaped 18'5 3/4" to win die long jump. Susie Gardner captured the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23. Gardner also placed second in the 1500-meter with a time of5:04.1. This weekend the Cats host their first track meet in five years as they host the first annual WCU Invitational. The WCU track has recently been resurfaced. The Cats will welcome East Tennessee State, Marshall, UNC-Asheville, and Brevard. Tweedlie pitches Western Carolina past Presbyterian 3-1 David Driscoll Sports Writer Phillip Grundy's sixth homerun of the season gave West- em Carolina University a late lead en route to their 3-1 victory over Presbyterian College Thursday, April 8. The game was scoreless until the 6th inning. Cats pitcher Brad Tweedie gave up three base hits in that inning to allow the Blue Hose to score their only run. In the 7th inning the Catamounts made efforts to gain the lead with batters Marc Striker, John Connolly, and Roy Hurst due up. . Striker stepped into the batter's box and quickly moved to first base after being walked. Next up to the plate was Connolly. He reached on a hard groundball to the left side at Presbyterian shortstop LukeLipan. His hit advanced Striker into scoring position at second base. Connolly and Striker were advanced one more base each when Hurst's rolled a sacrafice bunt down the third base line. Hurst was thrown out at first base. With Connolly and Striker in scoring position Stephen Pritchard hit a groundball to third baseman Jason Bradley. Pritchard beat the throw to first, but Striker and Connolly remained at second and third. Second baseman Rodney Hennon stepped up to the plate for the Cats with bases loaded. Hennon hit a sharp ball to the pitcher, who pivoted and threwoutStrikerathome. Presbyterian's catcher then threw out Hennon at first base. The Cats kept the Blue Hose from scoring in the 8th inning, even though it resulted in a pitching change from rirad Tweedie to Sophomore Eric Witson. W i t son faced only three batters before the Cats retired the side. West- em Carolina returned to bat with lead off man Jody Henson. His line drive to centerfield was enough to give him a single. Dan Derosia then pinchran for Henson at first base. Scott Lyman followed at bat and hit a line drive down the third base line. The Blue Hose decide to go with a pitching change from Jim Dudley to- righthander G e n Bergerson, who threw to two batters before the Cats scored again. Connolly- came to bat next and- hit a single. between' thirdbase and shortstop to score Striker from third. In the top of the 9th inning Witson threw to two batters before Mike Manning replaced him as pitcher. Manning kept the Blue I lose down to get the save. "Baseball" from page 6 slam. Grundy gave Western their only homerun. Both teams left six men on base. Also, the Catamounts had two errors compared to one by the Tigers. The Cats travelled down to Clemson, SC two days later, but also came up empty in that game as they lost 8-1. Grundy took the loss in the game.
