  • 16 Western Carolinian November 30,1995 Sports Western Drops Two at the Lobo Classic by Terry K. Roberts Associate Editor WCU lost basketball games to the University of Texas at Arlington and Mercer University from Macon, GA, in the Lobo Classic. Host of the Classic, University of New Mexico, took first place by defeating UT-A and Mercer. WCU, led by preseason Southern Conference player of the year Anquell McCollum, hung tough throughout Friday night's opener against the Mercer Bears. First half action saw five ties and four lead changes with the Cats attempting 48 shots hitting 18 for 38 percent. The second stanza had virtually the same up and down the floor, run and shoot type basketball as the first. The Bears gained their largest lead with 16:18 remaining when Kevin Skruka hit a 12 foot jumper from the corner giving UM a 55 to 48 advantage. However, with 12:03 to go Catamount Joel Fleming hit a three pointer giving the Cats the lead 63-62. Tied at 78 with 3:07 to go the Bears took control of the game when Ledon Green hit a three pointer from the top of the key. The Bears held on for a four point victory. WCU v. UT-A Saturday, in the hitting 16 for 29 for 55 pecent in the first half. UTA held a 6 point lead at half stretching it to 10 with 9:30 remaining Lobo Classic All Tourney Team: L-R MVP Charles Smith,UNM; Reggie Elliot, Mercer; Anquell McCollum,WCU; Damon Johnson, UTA; Claton Shields, UNM and Kenny Thomas, UNM. Thereafter, UTA broke away, increasing their advantage and securing a 9 point victory 92 to 83 over the Cats. Joel Fleming, Jarvis Graham, Scott Scholtz and Anquell McCollum combined for 61 of Western's 83 points. McCollum led all scorers withwith 54 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, 4 assist and played a total of 70 minutes leading to his selection to all tourney team. Anquell notes that "my main purpose was to win the Lobo Classic, however, even though we lost both games, being selected to the all tourney team was a major accomplishment." Moreover, "Q" adds, "I also wanted to see where I stood as a ivision One player" adding 'm pleased with my performance although there's room for improvement." Notes: Despite their lack of size up front, the Cats matched Jup well in the paint department. Around the basket the Catamounts scored 58 combined points in the two contests while . their opponents, the Bears and the Mavericks, had 64 total. consolation game of the Lobo Classic, the Cats were pitted against U-Texas-Arlington losers to U-New Mexico on Friday. Western held their own against the taller Mavericks when Reggie Brown hit a 2 point jumper from the base line.
