WCU brought it to within one, at three different times in the second half, but couldn't take the lead. The Cats'closest margin came with 14:54 to play on a Gaines layup from Terry Boyd. The Cougarsthenwentona 13-1 run to take a 13 point lead, expanding their lead to as much as 17 at the 4:37 mark. Western's 9-3 run in the closing minutes made it 79-70, College of Charleston. Robert Gaines led all scorers with 25 points, while Terry Boyd added 21. Maurice Williams and Scott Newman dished out four assists apiece. The Cougars were paced by AhdonusCofer, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Three other Charleston players were in double figures. USAF HEALTH PROFESSIONS COLLECT 919-850-9549 Despite shooting 44% from the field during the first half, the Cats led the Spartans 33- 31 at half- time. But Western could not overcome the outstanding performance of the Spartan's starting forward Yusuf Stewart, who scored a game-high 28 points and hit critical free 3rd STUDENT/FACULTY DIALOGUE ON ACADEMIC STANDARDS WANTED: WCU SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE "GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER" Qualifications Commitment to Academic Excellence Willingness to Communicate Students, Faculty, Administrators at WCU Interested in Attending DATE: February 12, 1992 TIME: 7:30 p.m. LOCATION: Cherokee Room, UC throws near the end of regulation and during the overtime period that sealed the Catamounts' fate Derek Smolik Sports Writer January 2: Home vs. Fayetteville State The Cats received their fourth consecutive loss, despite leading most of the game and holding Fayetteville State to only 44 percent of the field. With 7:34 remaining the Western trailed 64-58, then went on a 13-6 run to take a 71-70 lead with 2:07 left. The Broncos scored two quick baskets to retake the lead, 76- 75, with only :07 remaining. The Cats took the ball down the floor, but lost it out of bounds before they could take a shot. Western was led by Greg Dates with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Terry Boyd with 19 points and 9 rebounds. The Cats shot 49 percent from the floor, but were only 27 percent from three point territory, far below their average of 49 percent. Jan. 8 Home vs. UNC-Greensboro Both teams arrived in Cullowhee Jan. 8 for a re-match that again saw UNC-G emerge with a victory. The Spartans immediately jumped out to a 14-6 lead during the game's opening moments and never trailed during the contest, building as much as an 11 point advantage during the first half. Western's biggest loss of the nightcame with 11:34 remaining in the game. The Southern Conference's leading scorer, Cat guard Terry Boyd, went out with an elbow injury. Initial x-rays proved negative with no serious damage occuring to either bones or ligaments in the left arm. Boyd led the team with 19 points before the injury. He is expected to return to action on Jan. 25 against the Furman Paladins. WCU managed to claw its way back into contention during the second half, drawing even with the Spartans at 50-50 with 5:38 remaining in the contest. But three consecutive offensive fouls and a technical foul assessed to the Catamount bench were simply too much for Western Carolina to overcome as the Catamounts suffered a frustrating 65-55 loss at home at the hands of UNC-G. January 11: Home vs. Virginia Military Institute After a strong first half, in which Western took a two-point lead into the locker room, the Cats scored only 11 points in the first 15:55 of the second half and VMI withstood a late rally to win 79-74. VMI trailed by two at the start of the second half, but proceeded to go on a 16-2 run to take a 52-40 lead. The Keydets Lewis Preston scored 6 points during the run and had 10 points for the game. VMI was led by Charlie Peztold's 19 which included two three- pointers. The Cats were able to close to within four late in the game, but were beaten by VMI at the free-throw line. The Keydets shot 20 of 27 free throws in the last four minutes of the game. Western countered with five three-pointers in the last 2:32 of the game, including three by Bobby Getter, but VMI held on 79-74. January 18: at East Tennessee State The Buccaneers dominated the Catamounts from start to finish, leading by a score of 46-30 at halftime and extending it to 102-66 by the end of the game. The Buccaneers also dominated the offensive boards, out rebounding the Cats 24-8. West- em was without the services of Terry Boyd once again and was unable to pick up the slack. Maurice Williams led the Cats with 21 points and Roberts Gaines added 18 as well.
