  • Sports- The Western Carolinian Page 13 Thursday, October 26, 1989 (PMobyMMkHaskett) Aft«r her playing career ended, White served as head women's basketball coach at Warren Wilson College and was also the women's junior varsity coach at Owen High. "We are extremely pleased to have Stephanie White to join our staff," said Dr. Tony Baldwin, WCU's head women's basketball coach. "She will bring a solid background as a player and coach to our program. The fact that she is from the area is also a plus," he added. New Assistant Coach Named ^ to Women's Basketball Team SIO- Western Carolina University has announced the appointment of Stephanie White as the assistant coach for its women's basketball team. The appointment was announced by Bobby N. Setzer, WCU's Director of Athletics, and the university's board of trustees. White, a 23 year old native of Asheville, NC, graduated last spring from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a degree in sociology. She also attended Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC before transferring to UNCA. She played two years of varsity basketball at Warren Wilson and one season at UNCA before a knee injury ended her playing career. While at Warren Wilson, she was named the team's most valuable player and was named to an All- American team. White is a 1984 graduate of Charles D. Owen High in Swannanoa, where she was a ^basketball standout. Roach's Place-Kicking Records Still Stand on Catamount Squad Frederick Mason Staff Writer Western Carolina University has had two great kickers in its history of football. The first was Dean Biasucci, who currently plays for the Indianapolis Colts. He was responsible for many records in the Catamount history book. The second great placekicker was responsible for erasing most of the records of Biasucci and setting new ones. His name is Kirk Roach. Kirk Roach played with the Western Carolina Catamounts from 1984 to 1987. The Catamounts had just enjoyed a successful 1983 season with a 11 -3-1 record, the best record in the history of the team. Roach had very important shoes to fill, being the follow-up to Dean Biasucci, yet the problem was not a big one for him. Roach started off on the right foot by making the All- Southern Conference (first team). Lady Cats Volleyball Team Conference Play; to Face 6 Western enjoyed an 8-3 record that year. In Roach's four years, the Cats compiled a 22- 21-1 record. Roach also earned many honors that few placekick- ers have obtained. Roach was the first four-time All-Southern Conference (first team) selection in Southern Conference history. He is also the first three-time All- American (first team) selection in Southern Conference history. He established new records in the Conference for career field goals (71), season field goals (24), career kick scoring points (302), career scoring (302), season kick scoring points (96), and consecutive kick conversions (52). The NCAA recognizes Roach as the second all-time kicker in field goals, and Roach is unmatched in his seven field goals of 50 yards or longer. Recently, Kirk Roach was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the NFL draft, the highest any Catamount has ever been drafted. Athlete of the Week Sponsored by Pizza Hut of Cullowhee Perryn Oglesby Associate Editor Western Carolina University's Lady Cats volleyball jeam continued to roll through the Southern Conference in recent weeks. Two weeks ago the Lady Catamounts split two matches, jsut came back on Saturday against Marshall to post another Southern Conference victory. The win improved Western's record to 5-1 in conference play and 5-8 overall. The game against Georgia Tech was among the volleyball losses and this left the Catamounts 0-4 against Atlantic Coast Conference teams. Tech struggled to the victory because of the strong play of Regina Brown , Jackie Chang, and Kris Parker. Brown led the way against Tech with 30 kills. Chang and Parker also played well and had 19 kills each. Western then traveled to Huntington, WV to face off against Southern Conference up 5-1 in -0 Furman rival Marshall. The Lady Cats came out fast and quickly disposed of Marshall in three games, 15-5, 15-11, and 15-4. Kris Parker ended the match with 10 kills and a .643 hitting percentage. Regina brown once again powered down a team-high 19 kills and 12 digs. The Lady Catamounts are only one game out of first place, behind Furman. Furman is 6-0 in the Southern Conference and is heading for a showdown this month against Western. rnoro oy Mam Hatkan) Perryn Oglesby Associate Ediitor Western Carolina University's Cross-Country Team has been doing well this year. One of the many bright spots on the team is Shawn Leatherwood. For his outstanding performances all year and at the Western Carolina Invitational, Shawn Leatherwood is this week's Western Carolinian Athlete of the Week. Leatherwood finished first in the WCU Invitational with a time of 25:39 in the 5-mile event. We at the Western Carolinian would like to wish Leatherwood and his teammates the best of luck for the remainder of the year.
