  • THE Great Smoky Mountains are the crowning glory of the Appalachian range. This mountain mass is a monument of nature, as worthy of being preserved for the enjoyment of future generations as any National Park in the land. For this reason, with the assistance of the citizens of the United States, North Carolina and her sister state, Tennessee are purchasing the Great Smokies and will present them to the United States for perpetual preservation as a National Park. No better description of the qualities of the Great Smokies could be given than the reactions of two noted men, Horace Kephart, author and nature lover, and Robert Sterling Yard, secretary of the National Parks Association. "I have often pondered over the secret of that charm, that fascination of the Smokies which lingers so lovingly in one's memory when he is away and lures him so irresistibly to return," writes Mr. Kephart, "but I confess it defies analysis.
