Sports Cats Unlucky Victory Snatched Again Western Carolina University's unlucky football team. which lias watched victory snatched from its grasp on two successive Saturday afternoons, tries again this weekend to break the hex and a four game winless streak. lt may take more than a change in luck to break the streak, according to Bob Waters. Western's head coach, as he prepares the Catamounts for their trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Western Carolina will meet the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Moccasins Saturday night, a team that Waters fears as much or more than any on the Catamounts schedule. "They have the best personnel in the conference with an offense that can score from anywhere on the field and a defense that can destroy a team," warned Waters. The Catamounts saw the 10 p-int lead they held going into the fourth quarter disappear last Saturday when Appalachian State drove the football down the field twice against their defense thai was playing without experienced linebackers to pull out a 27-24 victory. Western Carolina appeared well on its way to a victory when they had taken the football to the ASU 25 with six minutes to play, but a holding penalty forced a punt that allowed ASU to regain possession for their winning drive with just over five minutes to plav. The Catamounts had apparently stopped ASU at midficld with three minutes to play, but a controversial facemask call gave the APPS new life. A week earlier, the Catamounts appeared to have locked up a 13-10 win over Marshall, but the Thundering Herd's Barry Childers kicked a Southern Conference record 59 yard field goal with 0:07 left to tie the game. The loss to Appalachian State produced more than an L on the Catamounts statistics sheet. Ricky Smith. all-Southern Conference linebacker, received a knee injury early in the second quarter and underwent surgery Sunday morning. He will join another four-year starter Charlie Hughes and sophomore letterman Alan Johnson on the sidelines for the remaining two games. Waters attributes much of Appalachian State's second half success to the absence of Smith. "Our freshmen were not ready to play against an offense like Appalachian State's and they (ASU) knew it and attacked us accordingly." he explained. The Catamounts will have to meet Chattanooga with a pair of green rookies at the linebacking posts - Clarence Lyon and Junior Jeffers. UTC. the defending Southern Conference champion, has bounced back from a couple of early season losses and has won three straight in pushing its record to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Conference. Coach Don Powers and the Cats rejoice after the CAts' second touchdown of the afternoon. As well as the CAts played through the game, Appalachian State's First year coach Bill Oliver at UTC can sympathize with Bob Waters' situation. The Moccasins two losses came when their super quarterback Steve Woods was ailing. The conference's leader in passing efficiency returned three weeks ago and UTC bombed VMI. 55-10. and followed with wins over Marshall and East Tennessee State. "They have a different kind of offense than Appalachian, but they are just as explosive and a much more powerful running team." said Waters. "Woods is the best all-around quarterback in the conference, plus they have three running backs (Gwain Durden. Mike smith and Tony Ball) that have killed us in the past and a receiver (Joe Burke) that can get behind any secondary and score as quickly as anyone we have ever played against." he noted. Durden and Smith rank among the conference top ten rushers and Ball rolled up 213 yards in last year's meeting between the teams. Burke has caught nine touchdown passes this season w'hile Woods has passed for 10 scores among his 116 yards. The Catamounts displayed an improved running Carolinian Photo by Robert Lahser. Mountaineers rallied in the final seconds to beat the Cats 27 24. game at Appalachian State as Leonard Williams and Anthony James shared tailback duties and they produced 138 yards. Sophomore Ronnie Mixon went all (he way at quarterback and completed 124 of 27 passes for 205 yards. "We did a pretty good job offensively aguinsl them and that's encouraging, but our defense has got some real problems right now with the linebacking situation being what it is." said Waters. UTC leads the series with four wins in the six games played. However, both of the Catamounts wins have come in Chattanooga, including a 31-21 upset win over the Mocs at Chamberlain Field two years ago. Last season's game turned out to be an offensive thriller. UTC held a 35-13 lead midway of the third quarter, but the Catamounts seord 22 points in a 12 minute stretch and trailed by seven with 5:04 to play. Western had a chance to win the game when they drove to the 12 yard line with 12 seconds to play, but Mike Pusey's fourth down pass was intercepted in the endzone as the moccasins held on to 44-35 victory. It's Basketball Season Again Almost Carolinian Photo by Robert Lahser. WCU's Pete Peterson engages a Mountaineer in a tackle in which a facemask penalty ensued "that cost WCU the game." The Western Carolina University basketball team held an intrasquad scrimmage Monday night at the Swain High Gymnasium in Bryson City, NC. and the results obviously pleased the Catamount head coach. Steve Cottrell. "I thought wc had a great scrimmage. We are enthused about it because of the play of defense and the team's overall conditioning. We look like we are ahead of schedule," notes Cottrell. set to begin his fourth season as the Cats' head coach. Junior Greg Dennis led the individual scoring with 35 points with sophomore Ronnie Carr tallying 34 as the veterans defeated the newcomers. 112-%. Si Sinmions added 13 rebounds to lead all others in that categorv. Cottrell also noted other encouraging performances. "Kevin Young did an excellent job running the offense, but the highlight was the phr of Greg Young.'' added Cottrell. Young, a 6-5 sophomore, scored 20 points and plaved excellent defense. Western suffered two minor injuries in the game with Kevin Young spraining his knee slightly and freshman Mike MacFarlanc turning an ankle. Neither injury is though) to be serious. WCU opens the 1980 81 season with an exhibition game against the Scotland National team. Saturday, November 22 at Reid Gym starting at 7:30 p.m. The regular season begins with the Cats traveling to Georgia Tech November 28. before returning for lhc first home game the next night. November 29, against Middle Tennessee State at 7:30 p.m. November 6, 1980/Western Carolinian/11
