  • Entertainment The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday. September 7, 1989 WWCU Back on the Air By Michael Jones As WWCU-FM, Western's campus radio station, signs on for another academic year, the old-timers here will notice a change. After one year as "Hot Hits 90.5 FM," WWCU rounds off its frequency and adopts a logo which station management feels is more indicative of the music which is played on the station. According to Drew Parham, the station's Program Director, "Power Hits 91 FM" will be a leader in contemporary hit radio. "Our goal," states Parham, "is to get what we believe will be the hottest hits on the air first. Our musical programming is intended to reflect the musical tastes of the students of Western and listeners in the surrounding community, and to provide music which is not readily available in the area. For example, WCQS, the local National Public Radio affiliate, programs classical, jazz and folk music. Therefore, WWCU-FM will not. WRGC, in Sylva, programs country. And although WKSF (KISS-FM) does get into the area, its signal here is noisy and weak. The same is true of WOKI, in Kn- oxville." Specialty programming has been a mainstay of the campus station since its inception. Current specialty shows include a progressive music show, two rock-n-roll shows, and a show featuring "party music." Special emphasis will be placed on improvement of public service programming, important to retention of the station's license. WWCU- FM is authorized to operate by the Federal Communications Commission under a non-commercial licence, meaning that the station is a public service and may not run commercial matter. Parham is the station's new Program Director as the result of station elections held in the spring of 1989. Other positions filled in the spring include Bryan Queen, as News Director, a post which he has held since November of 1988; and Aletha Hyatt as Public Affairs Director, for her second year. In station promotions, Lucy Woods becomes Business Manager after serving as the station's Traffic Director for a year; and Fredrick Mason moves from the executive staff member-at-large position to that of Sports Director. New station executive staff members include Jennifer Donnelley as Music Director; Bill Rau as Production Manager; Jeff "Duckie" Easter as Promotions Director; Jeff Phillips as assistant to the Program Director; and Chris Bern as assistant to the News Director. Michael Jones has been been promoted from the position of Program Director to that of Station Manager. Many changes and improvements have taken place at WWCU- FM, including equipment upgrades and station renovations, expected to cost $25,000.00. Funding comes from the Student Government Association and from WCU's Office for Student Development. To kick off the year, heavy promotional activities were planned in order to generate excitement from both the staff and listening community. The project exceeded expectations in its goals of "reminding the older students and letting the new ones know we're here!" WWCU-FM invites you to come up and try us out. UCA sponsors a ten-week tour across the U.S. each summer. Cheerleaders working on the staff travel to colleges such as Penn State, ETU, and many other universities to teach stunt techniques to other cheerleading squads. Cavan is a former gymnast and has been cheering for WCU for three years. Last year, she received an award for Most Valuable Player on the squad. Cavan says that auditions for the UCA staff included a cheer, a dance, a tumbling pass, and a variety of stunts. She adds that only 375 out of 1000 applicants were - 4- **™^ Tammie Cavan gets a lift from Mark Davidson picked for the staff. Davidson, a former football player and now captain of the Catamounts, was also chosen to be on the UCA staff. He says that the UCA provided a great opportunity to "stunt" with people from all over the U.S., as well as a chance to teach, coach, and perform. Next year's representative to the UCA staff will be sophomore Susy Williams.
