There are between 110-120 organizations about, and all are under the watchful eye of the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Glen Stillion. It's easy to think that with all those students in all those groups, Dr. Stillion has an enormous load. Actually, the group under Student Development is rather small when compared to Academic Affairs, which is the largest organization on campus. Dr. Stillion says that there are between 40 and 50 personnel involved with Student Development, plus the Resident Assistants, which number about 70. Though the number seems small, running Student Affairs in not an easy job. As Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, Stillion is responsible and Orientation activities. Dr. Stillion is also responsible for the University Center, Counseling Services, University Health Services, Minority/International Student Affairs and acts as advisor for all the fraternities and sororities. The Vice-Chancellor is not new to this position. He has plenty of experience. Stillion says that he has held the position for the last 16 years. Before this coming to WCU, Stillion spent five years at the University of Alabama in Tuscabosa, where he taught. Dr. Stillion earned a bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico, and received a doctorate in higher education at Florida State University. In between, he spent five years at Michigan Tech. As the leader of Student Development, Dr. Stillion is responsible for funds for student organizations. "All funds come from the Student Government Association, which works with Student Development," he says. "Activities and groups funded by SGA include Intramurals, Last Minute Productions, and WWCU." With the centennial upon us, Dr. Stillion will be busy with the upcoming ceremonies. A dedication ceremony is planned for the Alumni tower on September 29, with a full day of activities scheduled. Dr. Stillion will preside over the ceremony. "On that Friday, expect classes to be dismissed for half the day." Dr. Stillion is proud of this university, and the students in it. "Since I have been here, there have been many more activities here than in the years before. Ten years ago our Student Entertainment (LMP) was not here. Three years ago Ramsey Activity Center was just finished." Stillion says that he is impressed with the students' morale. He also comments that the academic quality is "much improved. The image of Western Carolina University around the state has improved over the years, and hopefully will continue to improve." WCU Housing Director Joins International Campus Housing Board By Shawn Busby The Association of College and University Housing Officers International has elected Randy Rice, director of Western Carolina University housing, to atwo-yearterm on its executive board. ACHUO-I is the professional organization of chief housing officers at colleges and universities across the world. Having more than 800 members, the association represents nearly two million students at educational facilities in every state and several nations. Rice was chosen as representative of the Southern District, one of four districts represented on the ten-member executive board. As representative, Rice will be responsible for the southeastern and southwestern regions, composed of thirteen states plus Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia and the Virgin Islands. Rice was elected at the 41 st annual conference of ACHUO- I, held in July at Western Illinois University. His duties will include acting as liaison between the execu- three committees: Conference Services, Apartments and Family Housing, and Information Systems. Rice has served on eight committees and task forces for the ACHUO-I prior to this election. Rice, who came to WCU in 1976, was formerly director of residence halls at the University of Southern California. Since coming to WCU he has served as president of the North Carolina Housing Officers in 1981 andttt* Southeastern Association of Housing Officers in 1983. Western Carolina University hosted the 1986 ACHUO- I annual conference. Rice was chairman of the conference, which brought 15,000 professionals from all over the country to Cullowhee. "We attempted to involve the whole community in the activities," said Rice. This particular conference was one of the highest rated in ACHUO-I history. WCU is one of the smallest institutions to hold a conference of the type. jgmmigjgin In 1984, Rice managed the housing for thirty-six different countries at the Olympic Village on the campus of USC. Other prior positions include assistant principal, head football coach, and athletic director at A. C. Reynolds high school in Asheville.
