  • western ■• • arolinian Gingerthistle to Present Free Concert at WCU by OPI Gingerthistle, the duo of Becky Cleland and Ben Seymour, will trace the musical threads of Appalachian fiddle tunes and ballads back to their Scottish and Irish roots in a free concert at Western Carolina University on Sunday, March 22. The couple, who hail from Tryon, have performed at a variety of festivals across the Southeast since 1980. They will perform at 3 p.m. in Founders' Auditorium at WCU's Mountain Heritage Center. The center is located on the ground floor of the H.F. Robinson Administration Building. During their performance, Cleland and Seymour will discuss their music, their instruments, and the local and distant roots of many of their songs. For more information, call the Mountain Heritage Center at (704) 227-7129. features March 18,1998 Early Registration: Avoid the Ramsey Center Rush by Phoebe Esmon Spring Break's over, and we all know what that means...early registration for next semester. There are those who will turn their noses up at this golden opportunity to get all the classes they need for next fall (or this summer, as the case may be). These are the same people that forge their advisor's name on their permit to register, and then fill in their schedule with whatever looks the easiest. In which case it might not really matter when they register or what they register for. For the rest of the world, however, early registration is a godsend. If you're forced to wait to register, the already harrowing experience of going to Ramsey Center to get all your p's and q's in order two days before classes start could become as traumatic as a train wreck, and just as painful. The process of standing in one line, to stand in another line, is one of those uniquely tortuous experiences and can lead to pedestrian versions of Road Rage, or worse... This reporter managed to complete an entire degree program without ever consulting her erstwhile advisor. Of course it took a semester longer than it would have if someone who knew what they were doing had taken the advising process in hand. It also became something of a game of "Speculation," with family members taking bets as to whether or not there were anymore general ed classes lurking in the wings. This is not to say that you should follow my example. These days I don't even go to drop/ad without consulting my current advisor. Life's too short to spend it languishing in CS 101 classes when you're a senior. Thus it is that, although upon occasion I am forced to enroll in a course that I am less than anxious to take, I nevertheless have a clearly planned course of action and can see that the end is nigh. Advising for early registration will take place from March 23 to April 9. This (of course) only applies to students who are currently enrolled in classes here at WCU. Undergrads may pick up their permits to register in their respective departmental offices. Those of you who have not yet declared a major may pick up your permits from the Career and Academic Planning Center, located in 30 McKee. Graduate students may pick up their permits from, that's right, the Graduate School office, which is located in 250 HFR Administration. The actual registration process will take place from March 30 to April 9. On the top of your permit will be the date, time and place for your registration. By all means go on the day you're assigned. Go early. There are a lot of classes, particularly upper-level electives, that only offer one section or have limited seating. Some classes are only offered once every two years, so if you miss it on this go-round, you've got a mighty long wait ahead of you. (This is where advising comes in handy.)
