  • The Western Carolinian Page 9 Thursday, February 23, 1989 Featured Friend: David Mitchell tells how he enjoys the program BSU Plans a Charity Trip for Spring Break Review of Comedian Randy Levin by Emily Oakes STAFF WRITER This week's Featured Friend is David Mitchell, an Early Childhood Education major. He is involved in the volunteer FRIENDS Program, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Management Department, which matches students with troubled youths. David is a member of Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity, and he found out about FRIENDS through some of his brothers who had also been in the program. Other interests include being active in the Methodist Church (where he works at the Cullowhee Monastery School), sports, and the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. A unique hobby for David is hot air ballooning. He said, "A woman in my neighborhood bought a balloon five years ago. The day that she bought it, she asked mc and some others to help her with it. Ever since then I've been ballooning. I hope to someday be able to purchase my own balloon." David was matched with Steven ( name has been changed for protection), a 14 year old, about five months ago. They've been skating together but mostly enjoy just riding around and talking. David says, "It's kind of boring to just go to a movie or something like that because we really don't get to know each other that way." The students in the FRIENDS Program are a special group of people. David related, FRIENDS, David and Steven get together at the skating rink "Whenever 1 have a problem with Steven, I come back to the class and get some alternatives from them on how to deal with the situation. All of the Friends, well, they're a neat group of people. Everybody's unique, and when we all get together with our matched Friends, it makes it even more enjoyable. The FRIENDS Program is a lot of fun." When asked what he would say to prospective volunteers, David replied, "If they're interested at all in helping people, this is the program to be in." Rewards for being a volunteer Friend come in many fashions. David shared, "One night I was with Steven, and we went to one of his friend's house because Steven wanted me to meet him. We were talking about school, and one thing really got me, Steven said, 'Well maybe one day I'll be able to go to college.' To this his friend replied, 'If you follow David and continue on with the FRIENDS Program, you can do anything you want, especially go to college.' It just made me feel real good to know that someone other than Steven, someone at his age level, realized that we can help people and that this program is beneficial." For more information on the FRIENDS Program, contact Ann Jacobs, Director, at 227- 7435. by Dawn Daniel STAFF WRITER Looking for somewhere to go during Spring Break? The Baptist Student Union is offering a trip that is both fun and rewarding. Each year BSU offers a "charity" trip, in which students help others. Students perform such tasks as painting, cleaning, raking yards, washing dishes, and helping with "Head Start" programs for underprivileged children. This year students will travel to Plymouth, Florida and stay at the YMCA's Camp Wewa. The trip is planned for March 3-10. While in Florida students won't only work, but will also visit various tourists attractions such as Disney World, Epcot, and Seaworld. They will also have a opportunity to meet BSU students at Central Florida University. Students who have gone on previous trips say that the gratification one gets from helping others is overwhelming! United Campus Ministries also offer a trip very much like BSU's, and LMP Announces New Committee Students Spend time with kids at the Mascotte Head Start Center in Mascotte, Florida this year they will be traveling to Jonesville, Virginia. Students should be reminded that these trips are open to ALL denominations. If you are interested in finding out more about either of these trips, call PaulRaybon at 293-9030. CULLOWHEE MINI-STORAGE RENTING LARGE or SMALL UNITS OLD 107 - ABOVE HARDEE 293-5599 by Jennifer Stroud STAFF WRITER On February 10, 1989, Last Minute Productions presented New York comedian, Randy Levin. Levin presented a 30 minute comedy routine which included take-offs on Southerners, NC State Troopers, and defensive driving. Levin's routine was very entertaining. He brought countless laughs and remarks from the audience. "I thought he was extremely funny and wish he would come back again," Kathy Redhing, sophomore, said. Levin also got participation from the audience for two of his jokes. In one joke, Levin put a sword through a student's neck! Needless to say, it was very suspenseful. And in another routine, one student acted as Levin's hands. Overall, Levin's show was quite funny and everyone who went enjoyed themselves. by Frederick Mason STAFF WRITER There is a new committee working for Last Minute Productions. This new group is called the Image Committee. The goals of this group are simple yet difficult. The Image Committee's job is to try to better the in tge of LMP as seen by the studeti ind faculty of Western Carolina I versity. This Committee is headed by Ken Maxwell, the member at large for LMP. There are a host of other members from different groups. The members consist of.Michclle Baker from the Films Committee of LMP, Chris Carrington from the Pub Committee of LMP,Bill Clark, the advisor of LMP,Tim Duquette, the President of LMP, Sandra McCall from Special Events Committee of LMP, Dr. J. Meigs, a Faculty Representative Darin Morrow, Promotion Assistance for LMP, Tracy Richardson from the Pub Committee of LMP, Carole Rogers from the Pub Committee of LMP, Charles Bailey from WWCU-90.5 FM The Group is currently working on a survey to have students, faculty and staff fill out. The reason for this is to find out what LMP can do to better satisfy the people of the university. Not only will the survey reach WCU, but also the school students, elementary students, parents and adults that visit the university often, so events must include them as well. The surveys will be handed out on March 1 and selected classes will be asked to fill them out, with permission of the instructor, at the beginning of class. Some questions may ask people why they go home on the weekends, what they do over the weekends, have you attended any LMP events or activities over the past few semesters and what would you like to see or have LMP sponsor. It is important that students answer these questions honestly and properly so that the Image Committee may have understanding of what the university and the surrounding community wants from last the LMP office for more information. mm* • • • TEXAN Home ot Daytona's hottest club 701 South TRAVELODGE BOARDWALK Next door to the International Nightlife 8, sunshine at its best featuring Daytona's hottest Spring Break hotels INTERNATIONAL The Spring Break favorite Best location on the strip TRAVELODGE SEABREEZE Located only 500 feet from the Plaza Right in the middle ot the action Driving Package it <k -4 QC00 Without Transportation* *3> Uv I Package* £ -l Q C00 With Transportation ■ Upgrades Available (small additional charge) • Kitchenette • Oceanfront Room • Premium Hotel Upgrade - Clarendon Plaza Arrangements by ECHO TOURS INC.
