  • Voices The Western Carolinian Page 6 Thursday, November 3,1988 Martha McAfee Editor Dear Editor, The first president that I remember was Nixon, and I can remember sitting on my grandfather's side porch on any particular Sunday and listening to my father and my uncle's and aunt's along with my grandfather while they debated the major issues of the day. My father was a republican and therefore I wanted to be a republican also, but I never could understand why my grandfather was a democrat. Here was a man who had read book after book and I was convinced that he was an authority on everything, so how could he be so "politically dumb"? My grandfather is eighty- six now and he still has the same values that he had on that side porch in 1972. The very values that I thought were so "politically dumb" yesterday" make so much sense to me today. I feel as if someone has finally pulled the flag from my eyes and I have stopped chanting pledges, saying prayers and watching football games long enough to look at this country with the lights on and without the rockets red glare. I was never more proud to be a republican than when Ronald Reagan took over a county riddled with self-doubt, a country that lacked direction and like a good football coach he motivated all Americans to once again respect the greatest country known to man. That was in 1980 and now here we are in 1988 and America, thanks to Reagan, is once again respected all overthe world. Our country needed Reagan and I believe that our country may have grown even weaker if he had not become president, and I hope history is kind to him. For Reagan's sake I hope my children will not read about his defense build up that doubled our nation's deficit, or his corrupt Cabinet, or his illegal arm's sale to terrorists, or the thousands of homeless people in our streets, or the lack of medical care for our poor and elderly, or his lack of funding for education or our deteriorating environment. History will only be nice to Reagan if we change the course of America and start putting our money and our promise into our people. It is up to responsible government to make sure the hungry are fed and the sick are cared for and that all people are given the opportunity to obtain higher education. The Reagan Era has created a gap between the have's and those people who think they have because they borrowed it from the bank. We have lost our middle class because they have taken the Republican's advice and invested not their money, because they did not have any to invest, but instead have invested their entire lives in order to provide a nice home for their children. All they had to give was their future worth to the republican capitalist version of the "American pie". Your opinion is the only thing that you truly own and I have stated mine here. I challenge each and every one of you to look around you and not just say things are going pretty good, but to look into the future and try to imagine where America should be and let's work together to get there. Sincerely, R. Kale Goins Letters to the 'Editor. .. Slave Auction Rebuttal Dear Editor, I think it is a sad day when one person's diligent remarks can make a fundraiser sound like a demon from hell. But what I would like to know, Mr. Mason, is who designated you the speaker for other people? I thought that you believed that it wasn't right to say "I am better than you." Well, you have just taken on that role. This event is not made out to be some sort of a joke, it is a fundraiser. The money made goes to the areas so that they may perform such activities as picnics, movie nights, etc. But, considering that you have never participated in such activities, you cannot be expected to understand that aspect. It was never once mentioned that it was okay to call it a "slave auction" because it was for a good cause. I think you put that in your article just to fill up space. You seem to be bringing up a personal vendetta that many of us would like to forget. No one I know is proud of America's, or for that matter, anyone else's involvement in slavery. I do agree that you have every right to view your point and maybe ins in some aspects I can agree with you. But, you went about it very unprofession- ally and biassed. Maybe you should take your staff writing position in a more respectable fashion or maybe it is time for a new staff writer. What I liked best abo t your article was the commeiu ~n how Will Settle helped run it a few years ago, and that he was black. But, you felt that was okay. I guess you don't mind the word "slave" as long as someone black uses it. Well, Will Settle is not here anymore and someone else has taken over. What difference does if make who runs it? You have made this issue much bigger than' intended. If you do not approve of some of the functions, then become a part of the process making. Instead of thinking about coming to RHC. DO IT! Speak your voice there and give some input/output. RHC is always open for suggestions and both RHC and RHA are very unbiased in planning activities. Maybe you would realize that if you participated. Your definition of the term "slave" is applaudable, but our definition in the auction is in a different form and fashion. No participant can be made to do anything demoralizing. People are asked to participate, not told. There is a difference! Sincerely, Chris M. Jackson RHC Hill Area President The Dirty Deed of a Democrat —by: a Republican Lori Gamble There is apparently a fraction of Democrats at WCU who are inconsiderate, aggressive and unaware of the first amendment. (I wonder if this fraction represents all Democrats in general? I hope not.) I say this because of the following incident: A couple of weeks ago, Jie college Democrats demonstrated their organizational qualities and ambition by displaying campaign posters of the various democratic candidates all around campus. I applaud them on their political dedication. Just recently, we, the college Republicans, ventured all over campus and displayed campaign posters too. They weren'tup a full 24 hours and some people tore them down. The democratic posters haven't been touched. This says one thing about Democrats. There are apparently some on campus who are belligerent, unrefined, and obviously unaware of American rights. It doesn't say that there are more Democrats because they are in the minority on campus. Evidently there aren't any Republicans on campus thoughtless enough to deface the democratic literature. I would hope that those of you who partook in the dirty deeds would want to set a better example of what Democrats are all about. f^CITY *New and Used Books ''Magazines * New Age Music *Classicai Music *Foreign Films on Video *We will gladly place special orders for you - books, videos, & music 55 East Main Street Sylva, NC 28779 (704) 586-9499 Hrs: 9 - 5:30 ROAD FOUND DAMN NICE LEATHER JACKET FOUND ON CAMPUS 10-26.
