The Catamount netmen feature n«, veteran team with six lettermen returning from last season. Dick Kuszyk should prove to be the number one man this year, as he joins John Christen- sen, Fred Ryder, Bruce Loftin, Nick Kale, and Lawrence Shoe as the returnees. Herb Bolick, a freshman from Hickory, and Randy Lanier, a first-year man from Thomasville, head the list of rookie prospects. Mr. Mcintosh of the English department is serving as coach of this year's squad. He is taking over for Danny Tharpe who is now teaching in Florida. The Catamounts play 14 matches during the regular season and then meet for the Carolinas Conference tournament, May 16 and 17 at Boone. Those students wishing to play tennis in the afternoon are asked to please keep off courts one and two at Reid Gymnasium, as they are reserved for tennis practice. Softball Gets Under Way On March 28 Softball is headed for the intramural spotlight this quarter as action opens Monday, March 28. Teams will be competing in a double-elimination tournament and the winner will be crowned the All-campus champion. If the competition is as tough as it was during the tag football and basketball seasons, this soft- ball season could prove to be exciting and interesting. Kappa Alpha, the defending champions, will be strong contenders for the title along with TKE, Delta Sigma Phi, and many dormitory teams. Fred Adcock will head the intramural program this quarter as student assistant to Mr. R. J. Martin of the Health and Physical Education Deaprtment. This quarter hopes to be the biggest yet as far as intramural sports are concerned. The intramural staff hopes for a larger number of participants this quarter and hopes for a tremendous growth in the over-all program in the coming year. For Sale 1966 V. By Steve White Spring Quarter means golf, fishing, sun bathing, and trips to the lake for most Western Carolina students. However, for a selected few—the Catamoun ball players—Spring Quarter brings a month of practice at thi art they know best—fighting for positions and scholarships. Head Coach Dan Robinson officially opened Spring drills Monday, March 14. Some 50 odd students are currently taking their knocks five days a week hoping that the Coaching Staff will remember, come September, how many good blocks they threw, how many men they fought off to make a tackle, or how many would-be tacklers they ran over on a 50-yard jaunt. Practice will continue for a- bout three more weeks with the Spring Game set for April 16. "We hope to have the Srping Game after we return from Easter break, but we usually lose a week to rainy weather. We could possibly play as late as April 23," stated Coach Robinson. The purpose of off-season practice is to replace graduating seniors, install new plays for both the offense and defense, and give the new men and non- lettermen returnees a chance to make the squad. "The Coaching Staff likes to Experiment, put some new wrinkles into our system, try some established players at different positions, and attempt to strengthen some weak spots," added Robinson on the purpose of Spring practice. While speaking of added strength, the Coaching Staff has added Bob Setzer to its ranks. Actually, Coach Setzer retruns after a three-year absence when he was head coach at East Rutherford High. The coaches' lineup now reads Coach Robinson, backfield; Coach Tom Young, ends; Coach Johnny Wike, offen sive line; Coach Setzer, defensive line. When asked about the first week of practice, Coach Robinson said he was "pleased with the progress of the offensive ground game." He pointed out the play of freshmen fullbacks John Batten and David Lomax as "promising." Chuck Scott, defensive star of last fall, "looked good" in the offensive back- field as he caught six passes. John Tinker, promising wing- back of last season, was outstanding on both offense and defense. In last Saturday's scrimmage game, the Jimmy Williams quar- terbacked "Golds" defeated David Turnipseed's "Purples" 12-9. It was a hard fought defensive struggle in which the squad was divided up equally into two teams. 1966 Football Schedule SEPTEMBER 17 Carton-Newman Away 24 Appalachian Home OCTOBER 1 Guilford Home 8 Catawba Away 15 Emory & Henry Home (Homecoming) 22 Lenoir-Rhyne Away 29 Elon Home NOVEMBER 5 Mars Hill Away 12 Newberry Away 19 Presbyterian Away ENSLEY'S SUPER MARKET Fresh Meat and Product* Fancy Foods — Fro/rn Foods Sporting Goods Wa Give SAH Green Stampi Call Virginia At BRADLEY'S HOUSE OF BEAUTY For The Latest In Hair Fashion 293-5251 Cullowhee.
