Sports Editor Western Carolina captured its fourth-straight league series last weekend against East Tennessee State at Hennon Stadium. After stealing the opening game 9-8, the Cats finished off the three-game set with an 8-7 victory on the strength of Donovan Minero's bat. WCU (19-19, 12-8) held off a late- inning surge by the Bucs (15-23,7-11) to win the rubber match of the weekend series 8-7. Minero led the offensive attack for the Catamounts with a career-high five RBIs. ETSU got on the board first by plating two against Western starting pitcher and eventual winner Ryan Basner (4-6). The Cats answered in the bottom half of the inning when Minero blasted his 12th home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give his squad their first lead of the day." The Bucs came back in the very to break the game open. A light dusting of snow at the 6,007-yard Hound Ears Country Club course forced the three-day tourney to be shortened to 36 holes. The Furman University Lady Paladins took the lead on the first day of competition, shooting a team-round of 303, holding on to take its eighth- straight Southern Conference team crown FU has never lost a conference championship. UNC Greensboro finished second, 17 strokes behind the Paladins, with a two-day total of 637. College of Charleston (652), East Tennessee State (671), and Appalachian State (674) rounded out the top five finishers in the championship. The Lady Catamounts shot a first day 330, good enough for fifth-place in front of both Appalachian State and Wofford. However, WCU managed a 347 on the second day, five- strokes behind fifth-place ASU, relegating the Lady Cats to sixth-place, two-round total of 677. Western Carolina finished two strokes in front of the Lady Terriers of Wofford College. The 2001 final finishing order was the same as a year ago. Head coach Steve Lott was pleased with the performance. "It was a well hosted tournament," said Lott. "After the first day, we were right there in reach. But the wind got to us on Monday. We were disappointed with our play then." He added, "All in all, though, it was a pretty good More on Women's Golf see page 1 showing."
