  • The Western Carolinian 11 Thursday, February 26, 1987 Lady Cats in Key Test Western Carolina University will host the fourth Southern Conference women's basketball tournament, which will be held March 5-7, next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, in the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center. Participating in the tournament will be the six Southern Conference women's basketbal teams: Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Furman, Marshall, UT- Chattanooga and Western Carolina. Tournament action will begin Thursday, at 6 p.m. when the third- and sixth-place teams match up. Following that contest the fourth and fifth place teams will meet in an 8 p.m. game. On Friday, the first-place team (which receives a first round bye) will meet the winner of the no. 3 vs. no. 6 contest at 6 p.m. The second place team (which also receives a first round bye) will then meet the winner of the no. 4 vs. no. 5 game in an 8 p.m. contest. Winners of Friday's games will meet Saturday at 3 p.m. for the conference LEGGETT college football player (al two positions, defensive back und kicker). In the NCAA in Miami, the Caiumounis lost to Atlantic Coast Conference champion Georgia Lech and Miuini. which won the regional and went to the World Series, in games dial they let slip away in the late innings. Such is the caliber of the Western Carolina baseball program, und there is good reason why it is so. "When. I first came here, us u is wiih any new couch, I dunk we had the three C's. hirst there was conflict, which we had lo gel the kids to dunk und work like we wanted them to do. Then there was change: the /'layers hud to adjust to the system we had and believe dial what we were doing wus right. Finally, there wus committment - thut is, the players really believing m what we're living to teach them. When you finally get that committment und it takes u while you really gel dungs going." "Hul I think we're definitely there now. It's been a lot of hard work; it's never easy. And where we are now, being the defending champion, makes il even more difficult for us. Three in a row is even harder. We have "to guard aguinsi dial kind of letdown." The commillmem l.eggetl looks for from his players - most "of whom gel partial scholarships, not full rules starts in die full. Prospects and returnees run through seven weeks for fall baseball practices, lifting weights several limes u week, running, und training in the fundamentals of die game. Breaking bud habits, evaluation, and eventually development - dial's the way l.eggell doesil in the full. "We review every player und know his sirenglis and weaknesses," l.eggell says, "and we go over everthing for them - all the fundamentals, the proper techniques, thr right moves - so dial by the lime spring lime rolls around, we're just reviewing. " II e get them on the conditioning program so that they're not only the big, strong athletes ihul they huve to be to play in Divison I, bin so dial they're menially lough us well, and li won't be as easy for them lo quit in situaiions when we really need them." The type of athletes l.eggell has, he says, are good athletes in high school who are often overlooked. championship. UT-Chattanooga is the defendng Southern Conference champion, having captured the crown in three straight tournaments. Currently Marshall and Appalachian State are tied for first in the league with 9-1 records, each handing the other its only conference loss. Western Carolina and East Tennessee State are tied for third with 3-5 records and two conference games remaining for each. Furman and UT- Chattanooga are in the conference cellar with 1-7 records and two games remaining apiece. Seeding for the tournament will be determined on Sunday, after all league action is completed. Tickets for the tournament may be purchased at the Ramsey Center. Adult tickets will be $2 for each day, or a pass for all three days may be purchased for $5. Student tickets will be $1 for each day, or a pass for all three days may be purchased for $2. They don't worry about scholarships, according lo l.eggell, and they more often 11uin not hit the books hurd. bringing their academic work on die road during ihe season often tunes, ten of the 28 Catamount busehull players hud grade-point averages of better than 3.0 last semester. "We're proud of thai," l.eggell ays. "They're not here to play professional busehull. They're here to learn, to get a degree, und lo have fun playing college busehull. They huve their priorities straight. My college experience wus a great experience; it was ihe right one for me. I want them lo be able to say die same." l.eggell currently has one player m the pros: Scott Gay, whose last year was 1985 and who is presently with die New York Yankees' farm organization. Certainly Western Carolina doesn't have the resources lo he an athletes' factory, and l.eggell even believes thai it doesn't huve the resources to be a top 40 learn. Hut he believes Western is a lop 40-type program. "I dunk with the type of athletes we ure u lop 40 program," he says. "We work harder, too, and we have an idea of what it lakes." More ihun likely al the end of April, you'll find Western Carolina participating in the Southern Conference playoffs; only the top four lea ins in the league will go. And there's u good shot thai the Catamounts will be playing in their third straight NCAA playoff. "I dunk we're going to he pretty good." Leggett suys. "We're going to have a pitching stuff dial may supn.se a lot of people. We're nine or 10 deep. And we're already an excellent lulling team. We need to find some leadership, some more of it al least, out of each player, hut before it's over we're going to be pretty good. "I ask so much of our players to play all year round and give me thut commillmem," he adds. "Our theme this year is three, lo win our third chanuonship in the Southern Conlerence. Thai's what the committment is for. I think it's worth il." A third Southern Conference championship plaque on Leggett's office wall would he further testimony to then. Hill also ended with 16. Tipton and Gault had 13 each, Hutchison had 11, and Walker had six. The Cats survived their own 40 percent field goal shooting and a two- for-eight free throw stretch late in the second half as they ended their conference schdule. It was the Catamounts' second straight down-to-the-wire league victory, following a 64-62 triumph over VMI on Feb. 16. Cottrell said after the victoryoverThe Citadel: "Our players are really excited about the tournament. Maybe we can get something going in the first round this year. I think we're starting to build some momentum." After the Monday night victory over Ferrum, however, Cottrell said he didn't know what his team was doing. "I'm mad about this one," he said after the Catamounts let the NCAA Division III Panmers sup back into mu game in me second half. "We looked like we were in second gear all night. I don't see how we could be thinking ahead of anybody. "For us to play at home, in the last game, like this, is just really disappointing Tonight was one of our worst efforts of the year. It's a good thing we weren't playing a team capable of beating us." After taking a 22-6 lead, Western let the Panthers crawl back into the thick of things and make the score 22-18 with seven minutes left in the half. The Catamounts led by 11 at halftime, 38-27, and jumped out to a 49-33 lead with 16 minutes left in the game, but poor execution allowed the Panthers to get as close as five points with six minutes left. "I looked at this as an opportunity to gain some momentum going into the tournament," Cottrell said. "We've been playing some of our best basketball of the season, and now we're going to have to go back to the drawing board." Gault led Western scoring with 19 points Three Catamount seniors-Walker, Richard Rogers, and Tiptorv-played their last home games as Catamounts, and Cottrell said he "appreciated the efforts they have given this program in their four years." But he voiced concern about this_ weekend's tournament. "Going into tonight, after that win against The Citadel, I felt we were turning the corner some, "he said "Now I think we're going to go up to Ashevilie and be tentative again." One bright spot: With their three straight victories-their longest winning skein of the year-the Catamounts at least avoided the indignity ofja 20-loss season. Small consolation.
