  • PAGE 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Friday, February 11, 1966 Behind The Scene By Don Lucas, Sports Editor The highlight of every season is the conference tournament. Although there are three games remaining to be played, players and fans alike are taking sidelong glances at the tournament situation. In order to qualify for the tournament which will be held in Lexington, you must finish regular season play as one of the top eight teams in the loop. The top four teams draw for their opponents from the remaining four teams. The brackets which they will occupy result from a drawing also. High Point occupies the roost now, and appears in good position to take the top-seeded spot in the tournament next month. The Catamounts now hold down third spot in the conference standings, but with three remaining contests to add to their mark there is still a mathematical chance for a conference championship. The winner of the tournament is the conference representative to the District 26 tournament. Members of the District 26 in South Carolina then send one representative to the district tournament, and the two teams which have the best record against District 26 opponents round out the four berths. As it stands now, Western is in a good position to take at least one of the district berths. Victories in the remaining three games, however, would make people rest easier if the Cats should fail to win the conference tournament. * * * Looking back over the home games this season, we find that the Catamounts enjoy Reid Gym even more than we thought. In the five home games this year, the Cats have scored 549 points. This is an average of 109.8 points per game. The Lenoir Rhyne game is the only game (not counting the AAU contest with the Phillips 66ers) in which the Cats did not tally one-hundred points. In the debut Western could only muster 98 scores. Individual scoring has risen among the Cats also. Guard Henry Logan has cut the cords at a torrid pace during the home stands, hitting 205 points for a 41 point average. Charlie McConnell is the only Catamount who seems to hit better away from home. Three more home games headline this season as the Cats fight for the District 26 berth. If all goes well as in past, more visiting teams will be leaving Cullowhee with their heads bowed in sorrow. Western Outlasts Efforts Of L-R's Bear's, 87-81 Day Students, Reynolds Team Still Undefeated In Basketball Action remained hot in intra murals this week as six teams were left in the running for the All-Campus championship. The Day Students and 1st and 2nd Reynolds South survived the third week of play still undefeated. Theta Xi, Kappa Alpha, 1st and 2nd Reynolds North, and 1st and 2nd Robertson battle it out for the runner-up spots in each league, and the right to compete in the All-Campus finals. The games this week went like this: Delta Sigma Phi fell to the Madison quint, 37-34, despite the 14 point performance by Joe Carnley. Bill Lowe led the winners with 10 points. Jim McAuliffe's 13 points led the Tekes over 3rd Robertson, 36-33, while Danny Railey led the losers with 16 tallies. The loss eliminated the Robertson team. First and 2nd Robertson got balanced scoring from Dan Jones and Robert Smith to defeat 3rd Reynolds North, 56- 28. Gerald West led the Reynolds team with 6 points. Theta Xi rode the scoring of Roddey Edwards to a 37-33 victory over the 3rd Reynolds South five. John Christenson had 12 for the losers. Theta Xi came through again on February 3 when they downed the Tekes, 34-28. Doug Year- gan's 12 tallies paced the Theta Xi boys while Buz Caishons led the Tekes with 10. First and 2nd Robertson de feated the Madison team, 36-31. Richard Baldwin paced the winners with 10 points as Ernie Wilson came through with nine for the Madison quint. The Day Students overwhelmed 1st and 2nd Reynolds North, 70-44. Harold Stevens rammed in 26 points for the commuters as they ran their record to 3-0. Bob Smith chipped in 17 for the Reynolds team. Jack Moose led 1st and 2nd Reynolds South to a 40-37 victory over Kappa Alpha, knocking the Greeks into the losers' bracket. Moose poured in 17 points, but Jake Hardin took individual honors with 23 points. Duke Loses Top Ranking The Duke Blue Devils of the Atlantic Coast Conference lost their number one ranking in the Nation to Kentucky in the weekly polls. Kentucky, sporting a 17-0 record, finally overcame the Blue Dukes after trailing closely for many weeks. Duke, only hours after the announcement had been made, lost their second game of the season to West Virginia coach Bucky Waters was former Blue Devil assistant. C0DGILL MOTOR CO. Sylva, N. C. Henry Logan's 31 points led the attack but he had ample support from Charlie McConnell with 25 points and Greg Wittman with 20. Western jumped into a 46-37 halftime lead but from there had their hands full. The Bears, stunned by the first half onslaught, rallied in the final twenty minutes but fell short as the Cats held on. Balanced scoring set the pace for the second half performance of the Lenoir Rhyne five. Mark LaMoreaux led the Bears with 18 points. He was followed by R. D. Carson with 17, David Wells with 16, and Rick Hardy and Aubrey Cochran with 15 each. A new omen met the Cats in Hickory. For the first time this season, the Catamounts won a ballgame from the free throw line. Lenoir Rhyne hit 33 shots from the field as opposed to 31 for the Western quint. The Cats, however, landed 25 free throws while the LR boys made 15 from the charity line. The victory brought the Catamounts' record to 14-8. A four- game home stand highlights the coming events and should prove important in the final season standings.
