With little variation that is ho a most newspapers across North Carolina and the South probably carried trie account of the WCl-ASU game this past weekend, BUT! What has not been said is that no one actually believed the Cats could really do it this year. Sure they had beaten Appalachian State four times in a row, but this year was different. Most people, even the biggest WCU supporters could see why; "Western was 2-7, Appalachian State was 7-2; Western had played terribly all year, Appalachian was rolling over major college opponen sj Western was a ''loser", Appalachian was ''goode'- 'n he<-k". BUT! What moat people didn''. realize was that when it snows in Cullowhee, the WCU stu~ dents do strange things. It snowed Thursday n'glu and so the football team decided it was go'ng to do a strange thing: beat Appalachian. The team d:d the deciding and after that it was history, WCO 20, ASCII. Individuals were non-exis- tant Saturday as the entire WCU team mauled the Apps with more desire and hard-hitting football than Whitmire Stadium has seen all season U>ng. Sure there were Cole and Do-cell Lipford with soitk timely runs, and Jeff Walker closing out his WCU career with key passing, but the team enthusiasm prevailed above any of these. Statistics show that Jeff Ciccone, Wayne Tolleson, and Mike Green caught the clutch passes and that M',»t DcGraf- fenreid, Harvey Walker and Jack Bowen snared the needed interceptions, but it was the combined offense and defense that stifled an Appalachian team that was ranked second in the nation in offensive statistics. ASU quarterback Robb'e Prices £w example, wt<s held neatly in check by the WCU defense, as the Mountaineer signal caller was held to 22 yards on 13 carries, far belo.v his usual output. Price also typified the Appalachian frustrations as the junior quarterback wis ejected from the game in the fourth quarter for kicking a WCU player after Price had b-.-e'i tickled in his own backfleld. Even the nine-point margin 's decepttv-j, as Western Carolina missed opportunities for more points when a pair of 26 yard field goa.s by piace kicker Steve Claxton and one point after attempt fell wide of their mark.
